I live at Katihiku. I belong to Ngati Huia.

I know this land as shown on the map. it belongs to Ngati Huia. Formerly Rauparaha and Rangihaeata gave it to Ngati Huia this was some time before Haowhenua.

We occupied it and remained continuously on it. Ngati Turanga was the only one who came to dispute the possession with us this was also before Haowhenua. Ngati Huia remained in possession and Ngati Turanga held other lands as I shall.

Rangihewea was chief of Ngati Turanga. After the dispute he and all his hapu went to Manawatu and left the land to me.

The descendants of Ngati Turanga who remained behind him outside the block Mahauariki settlement was outside in the angle N. W.

The line to Te Ngai was fixed by Ngati Huia some of Ngati Turanga were aware of it, it was before 1874 thence along to Ringawhati this is a new boundary line that is the boundary between us and Ngati Maiotaki.

Ngati Huia laid it down and cut it thence to Waiohanga Stream. No one opposed us cutting that line thence following the Waiohanga to the trig station the other side belongs to Ngati Pare and Kiri who have sold to government thence following boundary line of Rahui block thence following the said block to a peg known as Arama Karaka’s thence to the Maire thence along Hari Wirikake’s boundary a crop the river to a peg in the grant bed (S. W. point) thence recroping and on to starting point.

Ngati Huia cut these lines.

I know the big opening in the forest it is Turangarahui proper it belongs to us we have always cultivated and leased it the narrow piece between the stream and boundary line was cultivated by Huia my elder brother further down into the opening belonged to Riaki, Tanuku further down, next Ngapuke N. edge of the clearing comes Karanama’s between his and the western line comes Tautari. The whole of clearing has been cultivated.

Rangihewea had a cultivation inside the block to the western side – he was a Ngati Turanga that is the cultivation mentioned by the other side as being disputed this was before Haowhenua afterwards went to Manawatu and left his relations there who did not occupy it but lived at Kiharoa’s outside the block.

We admit them to the land outside. The cultivation at Te Maire belonged to Hape they ran on the outside boundary S. of the stream to Rahui Stream. Te Au’s cultivations comes next one of Hapi’s old people. Hoani Kotuku’s cultivations comes next he was father -----. Te Pahau cultivations come next known as Pakaraka. Riaki cultivations come, then Karaha’s then Pene Te Awanui which extend along the Rahui Stream to the survey line on the S. side between Rahui and Otaki River are cultivations of Hori Kerei, Te Hohia and myself from there to the Manuka bush and to the extreme boundary is mine cropping the Otaki is mine it now all washed away.

Pineaha’s statement is not correct as to his cultivating at the W. corner manuka bush it was formerly all bush.

I cut it down for making charcoal for Mr Hadfield.

I was two years making it out of one pit I got 40 bags another 30 then my houses were burnt down this part has never been under cultivation.

I recollect the cutting of the mill race all the Ngati Raukawa hapu’s had an interest in the mill which is outside the land they asked us about the mill race.

The upper part of the block to Ringawhati is a terrace – from the terrace to the line between us and Ngati Maiotaki is all Kahikatea swamp. When the water dries up we go and snare birds there. The whole of the eastern side is of the same nature.

Behind the boundary line is mountain. From the terrace to the Rahui Stream belongs to us we have karaka groves. I never saw Ngati Turanga there gathering karaka. We did every year, I never saw them snare birds. Kokomaku were the only birds we used to snare.

I recollect the dispute between Hohaia and Ngati Turanga about the boundary between the Maire and Rahui. They never claimed the clearing for themselves. This dispute lasted a month – not one day as stated by Pineaha.

Tanuku’s cultivation in the clearing was in dispute between Parakaia by Ngati Turanga he beat Mirika for siding with Ngati Huia it terminated in our remaining possession and we are so to the present. Ngati Turanga has no cultivations on either side of the Rahui Stream within this block.

We ceased cultivating there after Haowhenua after that we cultivated at the time of Kuititanga at Te Maire and also outside the boundary at Wirikake’s boundary we grew wheat.

I had a dispute with Ngati Turanga at the charcoal pits. Ngati Huia was the only hapu who used it. Their disputed had no effect. I got £10 from Mr Hadfield for the charcoal.

Kiharoa let the clearing to a European we came and drew the money £15 we afterwards fixed the lease. When Kiharoa brought the cattle there we drove them off broke the fence and drew the rnet he did nothing for this act of ours.

The European went away and took his cattle with him. Tamihana and others came to drive off the cattle. I saw Kiharoa’s fence which he had on the point I broke it down and drove off the cattle he never reacted it he is Pineaha’s elder brother. I have seen him there when he was young Kepa Whatanui and Pene Arama.

Kepa was half of Ngati Huia and Ngati Pare Pene is belonging to. They put sheep there and gave the money rent to Nepia Te Rau for me but meeting Hohua of Ngati Huia he got it.

We heard the sheep belonged to Kepa and Hoani Taipua and therefore we die nothing as we looked upon them as Ngati Huia. The sheep run there still. We don’t take rent because they are our grandchildren ---- Haowhenua the Ngati Turanga have never disputed ---- right until now.

They have no claim.

All the boundaries I have described belong to us. The boundary is a new one all the back boundary is cut and are ---- Ngati Huia my true line is the outside one to the north ---- ---- between us and Ngati Turanga the inner line was cut ---- ---- as far as Ringawhati with the cutting Hape carried to Waiohanga.

I cannot say it is cut or not.

There is no old boundary; our first survey broke off from Ringawhati to Te Maire. That survey was made in 1874 it was surveyed to separate Rangihewea and Te Ururoa’s. In this survey we include land left out before because land at the eastern corner had been sold to government we don’t claim Rangihewea’s cultivation inside the block he and his descendants can have it.

I included Rangihewea’s piece because he is entitled to it and has a claim. I do not know who owns outside our land we surveyed what lands we thought belonged to us.

I confirm what Tamihana said about this land being Waiohanga and belonging to Ngati Huia.

I live at Katihiku and Turangarahui.

Hohaia lives at Katihiku, Porotawhao and he belongs to Ngati Matau and Ngati Huia. Hohaia and others went to Porotawhao at the time Mr Hadfield and Mr Williams came here, Totaranui, it was in the open. I have seen no other hapu’s living on this land except on the outside.

Tamihana and Te Hoia is at Porotawhao.

We cultivated in the great opening before the Kuititanga at the time of the mill our cultivations were at Hari Wirikake’s boundary. These were our cultivations at that time for 3 years. We did not cultivate the open land because it was stony.

Turangarahui is all the land comprised in this survey. We claim to base of Ringawhati not to Maramahoe Ringawhati range is outside the boundary but the swamp is included.

Ringawhati belongs to Ngatutaki the swamp to Ngati Huia. I never knew Whatanui gave Ringawhati to Ngati Kiri.

I object to Natana Tauteka and others having their names in Waiohanga No. 2 in which Ringawhati is included. The object of including the Ringawhati in this land was because money had been paid on it and to save myself I had it surveyed.

Rawiri and party did not see the survey being made or Ngati Turanga. Hapeta saw it, if he did not he must have heard of it, it was this year. I did not see any former survey.

We were quite right in surveying it by ourselves. We did not expect any trouble there were no boundaries in the old times. It is only now they have marked them off.

Rangihewea’s descendants are Katarina, Roere.

This land is all Waiohanga. I knew Rangihaeata he was a Ngati Huia. I knew Rauparaha who was a Ngati Huia. Hoani Taipua is a Ngati Huia and part of Ngati Pare. Kepa is also Ngati Huia never disputed amongst themselves.

I never saw Ngati Turanga or Ngati Maiotaki laying off the northern boundary line. I never heard or saw Ngati Maiotaki or Ngati Kiri working on the land outside the N. boundary.

Matene belonged to Ngati Huia we have had disputes with but nothing very serious. Ngatipari, Waiohanga and Rahui they are mokopuna’s. I have never seen Ngati Maiotaki either occupying the land at Waiohanga can deny they had snares on the land. We have no houses at Waihoanga but we have the mana. We have no tracks over that land.

I never admitted at the court in 1874 that Ngati Maiotaki had any rights at Waiohanga. I admitted they had rights on the mountains but not on the low lands.

Younger brother of mine worked at Ringawhati. I said in 1874 I claimed Ururua’s cultivations in Waihoanga was the base of my claim.

I mean Ngati Pare living on this land I meant Rangihewea on the ----. Kiharoa on the outside at the S. W.

My objection to Tauteka Natana is within the northern boundary not the outside. The land was not subdivided inland because it was all mountains.

Hapi Te Rangitewhata – sworn

I belong to Ngati Huia. I live at Katihiku.

I know the land as shown on the map and all its boundaries. The ancient boundary was outside this block it was the boundary of Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Huia it was from Ringawhati to Korohou was fixed by Whatanui it was laid down when Ngati Raukawa first came to the end of the fights.

When I was grown up this was the understood boundary Ngati Raukawa latterly encroached on that boundary.

This land included in these boundaries was given to Ngati Huia by Rangihaeata and Rauparaha.

Ngati Huia heard that Ngati Turanga had taken possession of Te Mairi they came to turn them off they had a fight and Ngati Huia remained in possession Ngati Turanga went to Manawatu through them living their houses and turning them off.

I consider the land is ours.

Hari wirikake and I laid the boundary (S.) as far as the edge of the bush to the Otaki River he wanted to take in a piece, I objected. Ngati Turanga objected to him in the N. L. Court.

Waiohanga was claimed by Ngati Rarangi who bought it on in the N. L. Court I opposed I explained I claimed from the western point of this block to the Waiohanga Stream.

The reason the old boundary was abandoned was because we wanted to leave a strip between for Tuteka and others descendants of Whatanui, Ringawhati is about 15 chains from the boundary.

The south boundary is very steep land. The cliffs run along the N. E. boundary then cropping it and coming down near the mouth of the Waiohanga. Arama Karaka said the included piece Rahui. I told him I had given evidence about the whole I consented to his having that piece, he is a Ngati Huia.

There is a mill at Waiohanga in which we were concerned it was Ngati Kikopiri, Ngati Turanga, Ngati Huia Rauparaha was one of the managers. Te Ururoa was another interested.

The timber was there ready to build the mill some dispute arose and the mill was not built. Ngati Raukawa never came forward and objected to it.

I directed the survey of the western boundary.

Ngati Raukawa applied to mother of Ramari with reference to the mill race at Rahui.

Ngati Huia consented.

The inner line of the north boundary was cut but the outer one is the boundary.

I know the opening in the bush for 30 years formerly there were cultivations there by Ngati Huia.

Ngati Raukawa cultivated on the edge of the clearing near the boundary. Ramari one of Ngati Huia married into Ngati Maiotaki that is why they planted kumara’s there. It was cultivated at different times by Ngati Huia.

I have never seen Ngati Turanga cultivating there. All south of the Rahui has been cultivated we accepted Te Rangihewea’s piece. All that strip along the northern boundary as far as Waiohanga is swampy and inaccessible.

We go on to this land every year to collect karaka’s. Ngati Turanga do not go there to collect karaka’s.

I have never seen Pineaha on the western corner but outside. We are the only people. I have seen with exception Te Rangihewea on this land.

Whatanui’s boundary was dividing his land from this is outside the block.

Whatanui drew in inside of his boundary other people. Ngati Huia made no objection at that time we cannot dispute their right to anything they took up then.

There is a block outside the western end of this block which I disputed.

There was a piece of land given to college we did not object it was outside the block.

I came a year before Rangihaeata’s fight 1844.
