Manahi Te Umu
I remember the land at the mouth of the river. It used to break through.
Ngati Raukawa conquered it from Ngati Awa before Kuititanga (1839). We built a pa there. The 2nd was at Pakakutu, at Rangiuru also. Ngati Maiotaki, Ngati Turanga, Ngati Parikohatu lived there.
The pa belonged to the whole tribe. The whole of Ngati Raukawa took part in the conquest.
I claim for all Ngati Raukawa. I am a Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Huia and Ngati Maiotaki. These came under Rauparaha.
Ihakara Whakamaru
The part on the north of Otaki River from ancient times was a pa. Ngati Awa built it before Haowhenua.
Kingi, myself and Matangi lived there. The Taranaki tribes came down and attacked Pakakutu. They were beaten and Ngati Raukawa held the pa.
Hema Te Ao, Piwiki and Kipa Kiri Kiri – these persons spoke at length on the subject.
Case closed in respect of evidence.
