6 August | Fine, but blowing gale from East. Sale of my dairy cows. Up at daybreak getting things ready. Judd did not arrive until about 9.30 when we numbered the cows & fed out hay. Mr Tom Powles mustered heifers for me C Mr A the bull. Miss Salmon helped Jen with lunch which we served in the trap shed. The crowd that I anticipated did not arrive. There was rather a poor attendance as there is such a tremendous lot of cows at present on the market I felt rather dubious about the prices. However I took £160 for 27 cows, about £6 average the remaining 9 (late calvers - old) being passed in. The top price reached was £10 for "Iris" paid by Alf Anderson who purchased 7 or 8. Those present considered the sale a good one. The pigs realized £3/5/0 38/- 31/- 2/11/- some 24/-. I also sold our gig for Ell. Totara piles passed in. Jen & I were both dead beat so we turned in early. Tom Powles was of very great assistance & was very kind. |
