He went to Kohuturoa to work. Major Kemp and Hunia arrived and went with their guns and all Muaupoko over the lake to shoot Te Watene. When they arrived at Kohuturoa they assaulted Te Maunui and Hetaki because they took part with Watene. 2 houses were burnt by Kawana Hunia. Watene was sent away from Kohuturoa.
Watene returned to Raumatangi and then went to Waiwiri and afterwards he came back again. When he went away he was afraid of being shot.
After the burning of these houses, Major Kemp discussed it expedients to build a pa at Pipiriki. We lived at Pipiriki and Watene wandered about in fear – from one place to another.
All this land is Whatanui’s – from the sea to the mountain. I know this use to be my people and ancestors for fishing and hunting. I know the names of places where my ancestors snared birds.
Tokaroa was one on the Ohau river – shags bred there. Tokapapa is another – trout were caught in the stream there. Te Arapaipai and Haeretutarangi are two places for killing huia’s.
Whakapapa is the name of a road lying at Papaitonga along which they travelled through the country.
Te Arapaipai – this is an old war track.
Tirotiro is the middle of this land and is a boundary of my ancestors and of the Muaupoko. Now it is an orchard – trees planted by the people of this generation.
Kohitere is the house used by Muaupoko for killing cattle, sheep and pigs etc.
Te Kahika …. Confirms Kemps …. Relative to their ancestor escaping up a tree.
There are many cultivations here of which I do not know, the names between Ohau and Arapaipai.
On the other side of Arapaipai is Makahikatea where a cultivation and a place to catch rats. I do not know the roads leading houses to the hills. I know Ngamana as the name of a pole. It was burnt by Muaupoko – Te Pouwhakairo. Hoani Tahu burnt it. We were quarrelling with Ngatihuia. The first pole was pulled up. The second was a carved pole and Muaupoko burnt that.
There are ponds between Hokio and Waiwiri which are used by Muaupoko. I know Otauhauho. There’s a lake and cultivation where we go to fish. I have speare eels there and Raukawa have not been there to my knowledge.

When did Muaupoko catch eels there – outside the boundary we admit? We are doing it constantly at Otauwhawha up to the time I came to court.
Are the NRaukawa permitted to kill eels there? I have not seen them – had I seen, I should have seen them away.
How often have you been to Makahikatea? No.
Have you ever been beyond Papaitonga? Yes. I have been to Totaranui and beyond but do not know the distance.
When were you at Tirotiro? I was there quite lately eating peaches.
Who made those roads? Muaupoko.
Were they not made when you were running away from NRaukawa? No.
Were not the Muaupoko beaten by NRaukawa and made slaves of? No. I have not heard it.
Did not the Ngatitoa and Ngatiawa make slaves of Muaupoko?
Did Watene live here? Not permanently.
Does he live ther now? Yes – without right.
If you own this land why allow Watene and other Raukawa to live here? Because of the action of the government and Kemp, but for whom he would be kiekie of them.
Would you require Kemp and Hunia to assist you to kick them off? Was I not strong enough to tear up the lease?
Are any other NRaukawa besides Watene living here? I have neither heard nor seen.
How many Muaupoko live on this land? I cannot count them.
Name one place where Muaupoko live? Kohuturoa – Tamati Maunu lives there, and nearly all Muaupoko.

Hoani Meihana said we have prepared a list of names. All the natives are not agreed as to the decision. We would like 3000 acres in one piece and 4000 acres in another. The fair way would be to divide it equally.
