Don’t know the ‘take’ of my mother’s occupation. We were there in 1846. It was fenced by us in that year. 2 houses built on it by us a ‘whare puni’ and a ‘whareparaki’. When we occupied did not see any one else in occupation of any portion or who claimed or forbid our cultivation. I and my brothers 7 of us grew up on this land when our houses were ‘pakaru’ 8 years ago we moved to another piece which I have since sold to Dr. Hewson and we still returned to this piece Kopikopiko. We left of our own accord. Not ejected by any one. My brother Robert claims to unite with me – there are 11 of us children of same mother but not of same father – claims the land as eldest son. We have land at Ohau and at other places.

Of Ngati Kauwhata. Oroua. I claim this land.

I accept Tiemis plan. Claims this land. My ‘matua’s cleared this land. Knows the land shown on the plan. There was a grand clearing by all Ngati Raukawa and this portion was cleared by my ‘matua’. I know the boundaries of the piece which my ‘matua’ cleared. I know the boundary of the piece cleared by Tiemi’s ancestor. After the settlement at Rangiuru nga Ruinga cultivated a portion of this land a ‘whare kika’ and afterward in 1863 we came to mark out boundaries. I and Marino and Paranapa (he papa no Hemi) Te Peina (a ‘tupuna’ of Tiemi’s) and Moihi (a ‘papa’ of Tiemi’s) Te Ahitana (a ‘tuakana’ of mine) these persons laiddown the boundary between us and the ‘matua of Tiemi’. In that year I sold this land to Dr. Hewson. Marino was a ‘tupuna’ Tiemi’s.

The year of the ‘tuanga’ was the year of the coming from Kapiti. I left Otaki the year that Rangiuru was built ‘ka timata te whakapono’. I left Nga Ruinga who cultivated a part of our clearing but not this piece. I did not interfere with you because I was at Oroua. Nga Ruinga did not interfere because Marino and Peina were on one side and they are ‘papa’s of mine and of my ‘tuakana’ Ahitana. I don’t know about boundaries being marked when the land was given to you. It was a ‘mea tahae’. I have not cultivated since Rangiuru but I know the boundaries.

Kotahi tonu te mahinga a Ngatiraukawa me aku matua i tenei whenua mahi ana a Ngati Raukawa i a ratou, mahi ana aku matua i tenei whenua, ko nga rohe a aku matua kei te mohio au, e mohio ana hoki nga tupuna o Tiemi ki nga rohe, noku tera whenua i muri iho i te nohoanga o Rngiuru ka noho ia e Ngaruinga tetahi taha o te whenua nei hei whaea keke ki a au. Mutu atu te mahi i reira takoto noa iho i muri iho. Koira anake te mahinga na taku whaea; I te tau 1863 ka tae mai matou ki te poupou i nga rohe o taua whenua, ahau a Marino, a Paranapa, a te Peina, he tupuna no Tiemi, a Moihi ana Ahitana he tuakana noku. Knows the land.

The land was cleared before Haowhenua (1835). It was cleared to grow food for that ‘pakanga’ with Ngati Awa. After that ‘pakanga’ Ngati Raukawa took possession of Manawatu and on the return cultivated their ‘mahinga’ Hoeta’s ‘papa’ occupied and cultivated and had their ‘whare’s – ‘whare puni’ and ‘whare nunui’ on their portion up to the time of the Kuititanga. After that came Mr. Hadfield and after that the treaty of Waitangi and Hoeta’s ‘papa’ were there occupying. Their ‘pa’ was Rangiuru. As the ‘whakapono’ increased Hoeta and his ‘matua’ went to Oroua. It was after the treaty. We and Nga Ruinga remained. Nga Ruinga and I cultivated this land, a portion outside and portion inside the boundaries shown in the plan before the court. Tiemi and his mother lived at Rangiuru. After that Rangiuru was left and Ngati Kapu came to Pukekaraka and then the house of his mother was first put on this land. Nga Ruinga was my mother’s elder sister’s child. She went to Ereni told her to move her house as the land belonged to some one else to move it to Marino’s land. She and Marino ‘Ngangare’d. I was present Ereni replaced that her’s was only “he noho noa iho”. She staid there till she removed to Marino’s land as stated by Tiemi.

Hoeta was a ‘pakeke’ at the time of Rangiuru. Hoeta is wrong in saying he was ‘tamariki’ at that time. The ‘whare paraki’ ‘a to papa’ was on this land. Erina said when Nga Ruinga went to her, that it was a ‘noho noa iho’ and that she should move to Marino under the year. It was up to the time of leaving Rangiuru that I cultivated. The wooden house was after the survey of the Otaki township – after the Bishop’s talk.

It was during the occupation of Tiemi’s mother that Nga Ruinga told her to move off. It was perhaps a year or two before she did move on to Marino’s land. Tiemi is a tamaiti of mine. Te Peina is a “korona’ of Tiemi.
