Buildings destroyed by fire, Oxford St., Levin

People examine the burnt out site of business premises on the western side of Oxford Street. The building to the right was A L Williams’ Tea Rooms and this was sold to Woolworths in 1947 and demolished to make way for a new building. The tea rooms was situated in the northern half of what is now (2001) the DEKA Building.

Opening Levin Carnegie Free Library, 29.11.1911

Typed on paper glued to back: “Opening of the Levin Carnegie Free Library 29/11/1911 Opened by Sir Joseph Ward, Premier. Entirely financed by Carnegie grant. Built by Mayer and Illingworth at a cost of 1450 (pounds), $2900. Sited on the north west corner of Bath and Oxford streets. Demolished March 1965. Brenmuhls and Warnocks shops are now on the site. Photo taken by Joseph Scott with a Brownie Box camera, Kodak.”

Written on back with black pen: “1981, Page 89. Chronicle Supplement.”

Opening of the Levin Carnegie Free Library, 29 November 1911. This library was situated on the north western corner of the intersection of Oxford Street and Bath Street.

Swainson & Bevan Ltd Building, pre 1910

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “This building was at the corner of Mako Mako Rd. & Oxford St., and was burned down. The late Mr Walter Bull is leaning against post. Not sure of the date, but over 50 years ago. (before 1910) From Mrs Walter Bull.”

This same information is typed on piece of paper and cellotaped to back.

Swainson & Bevan Ltd building, on the south-west corner of Mako Mako Road and Oxford Street at Weraroa before 1910. The wooden building is two storied and has a coloured iron verandah supported by wooden poles. The shop opens onto the corner of the intersection and a gas lamp is suspended from the verandah above the entrance. On Oxford street a man is driving a horse and cart while a man sits astride a horse on Mako Mako Road. Four men stand outside the entrance to the store, the one in shirtsleves leaning against the pole has been identified as Walter Bull,while another man stands beside the horse and rider. 1 Colour photo print, mounted

Weraroa & Railway Station

Weraroa & Railway Stn. – (caption). 1 B&W postcard.

Main Road at Weraroa showing the Weraroa Hotel on the corner of Ward Street, and the Levin Railway Station on the left in the distance. In the centre of the photo is a horse and trap, and a youth leans on a bicycle chatting to two young girls. Two women and a girl have just walked past the general store, which doubles as a registry office for servants, and there are others outside the hotel and other shops.

Perreau's Bakery, Foxton, 1904

Printed on back: “Photograph courtesy of Foxton Historical Society. PERREAU’S BAKERY 1904. Mr M.E. Perreau was not only renowned for the cakes and pies he baked, he was a long-serving Mayor and member of virtually every organization in Foxton at the time.”

Manawatu Hotel, Foxton

Postcard donated by Mrs E.M.Wood 372 Oxford St, Levin

The “new” Manawatu Hotel, Foxton. A E Shadboldt was the proprieter at the time this photograph was taken. A horse, bicycles and a horse-drawn carriage are the featured means of transportation in this photograph. Four women stand on the upper floor balcony and a number of men stand on the footpath outside the two storied weatherboard building.

Bock and Coley Flaxmill

The original photograph is mounted on board. Inscription on reverse reads: “Given by Podmore family.”

The sepia coloured copy has been fixed to thick paper and has inscribed below the photograph: “Bock and Coley’s Flaxmills, Stewart Street, Foxton, 1912. (Negative held by I R Matheson 1975).”

The black and white copy has inscribed on reverse: “Original given by Podmore family.” and “Bock & Coley Mill.”

A sepia coloured photograph showing an unidentified group of 18 workers standing in front of the Bock and Coley flaxmill, Foxton. There is a man standing on one dray pulled by two horses to the right of the photograph and in the centre and left behind the row of workers are two more such drays. The mill is made up of four buildings.

Swainson & Bevan Ltd building, south west corner of Mako Mako Road and Oxford Street at Weraroa before 1910. The two storied wooden building has a coloured iron verandah supported by wooden poles. The shop opens onto the corner of the intersection and a gas lamp is suspended from the verandah above the entrance. The road outside the building is unsealed. On the seventh and eight windows from the left on the upper floor, the words “public” and “library” are inscribed.
