The eastern side of Oxford Street, Levin, looking south towards the Bath Street lights, 1990. Taken at 4:45pm this photograph shows the large volume of traffic on Oxford Street which is also State Highway One. The two storied building which was the Arcadia Hotel is visible at the end of the business premises at the Bath Street intersection.

The three women share two parasoles to protect them from the sun. A boy wearing a cloth cap and another person are barely visible inside the coach.

Old sawmill site, Makahika River

Written on back with black ballpoint pen - The Bartholomew sawmill occupied this site by the Makahika river from 1906. Late in 1913 the machinery was removed to a new site near the Makaretu junction with Ohau. G.L. Adkin renovated the whare next the low knoll (The ‘Kopje’) so that he could camp there while developing North Block. After he had married Maud Herd ( in December 1915) they spent nearly three months living here while ‘Woodside’ homestead was built on Section 42, Queen Street East. They called it ‘Sonoma’, after ‘The Valley of the Moon’ in Jack London’s novel of that name. (Adkin Coll, A.T.L)

Flax Cutters, 'Miranui' Mill, Shannon

Four flax cutters taking a break, Miranui Mill, Shannon. The swamp was divided into blocks which were cut once every four years by the flax cutters.

This phot was also used in Bob Ayson's book Miranui with the following description:

Flaxcutters having a welcome rest amongst the flax. The swamp was divided into blocks which were cut once every four years by the flaxcutters who used a sharp blade shaped like a reap hook. The portions of the block allotted to each group of cutters were called "breaks". The flax was cut about one foot above the base of the plant and tied into bundles of about 25 to a ton and stacked for the "trammies" to collect. Over three acres of flax was cut daily and the average worker cut 3rh to 4 tons of flax in a 8 hour day. About 22,000 tons of leaf was cut annually.

Tunnellers, No.2 Tunnel, Mangahao, 1920's

Skating Rink, Oxford St., Levin

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “Skating rink. Bottom of Oxford St. just near Stuckey St. north of (now) Wisharts Textile Factory.”

An unidentified girl on roller skates at the skating rink, Oxford St., Levin. The rink was located immediately opposite the Principal’s house at Levin School, and the apex of this house (now, 2001, the Information Centre) can be seen above the rink wall in the centre of the picture. This site is used today as a car park for workers at Wisharts.

Buildings destroyed by fire, Oxford St., Levin

People examine the burnt out site of business premises on the western side of Oxford Street. The building to the right was A L Williams’ Tea Rooms and this was sold to Woolworths in 1947 and demolished to make way for a new building. The tea rooms was situated in the northern half of what is now (2001) the DEKA Building.

Harvey & Co. Ltd., Oxford St., Levin

Handwritten bottom right of original: “32.”

Harvey & Co. Ltd., builders and joiners, Oxford St., Levin. This two storied wooden building was built in 1912, and Joe Harvey operated from this site as a cabinetmaker, with a shop on the ground floor and a workshop upstairs. In this photograph four people stand in the entrance to the shop. This building still stands today (2001) and is currently the premises of Robyn Bates Pharmacy.

W.M. Clark's New Shop

The premises of W.M. Clark, Importer and Draper, c. 1903. Situated on the eastern side of Oxford Street, this wooden shop replaced the one shown in 2000.018.0137, and precedes the shop shown in 2000.519.0001. A verandah supported by wooden posts covers the outside of the shop which has many of its wares on display. Three men, one woman and a small child are standing on the verandah in this photograph which also shows a hitching rail at the front of the shop. Although the street is unsealed and there is no footpath, metal has been spread infront of the shop.

Swainson & Bevan Ltd, pre-1910

Swainson & Bevan Ltd. building on the south western corner of Mako Mako Road and Oxford Street at Weraroa before 1910. The wooden building is two storied and has a coloured iron verandah supported by wooden posts. The shop opens onto the corner of the intersection and a gas lamp is suspended from the verandah above the entrance. On Oxford Street a man is driving a horse and cart, while a man sits astride a horse on Mako Mako Road. Four men stand outside the entrance to the shop, the one in shirtsleeves leaning against the verandah support post has been identified as Walter Bull. Another man stands beside the horse and rider on Mako Mako Road. On the seventh and eigth windows on the upper floor of the building, the words “public” and “library” are inscribed.

Governor General Jellicoe visits Levin, early 1920’s. The Governor General and other dignitaries stand in front of the Century Hall, which was situated on the south west corner of the Queen Street / Cambridge Street intersection. A large crowd has pressed forward towards the dias and three police officers stand amongst the large number of people.

Commemoration Service for Edward VII, 1910. A group of dignitaries has gathered around a dias at the intersection of Oxford Street and Queen Street. First War Memorial and Thompson House Levin, c.1922

See also 2000.234.0001 (original and information) as follows: “Cenotaph. (Circa 1922) The first Soldier’s Memorial erected in the Public Gardens. Due to public protest, it was pulled down and the present one built. The stone in the picture was a natural one obtained from the Arapapae Hills (Gladstone Road extension). In getting the stone out it was cracked (as shown in the picture). Thompson House is in the background.

The first war memorial in the Bath Street gardens with Thompson House in the background, c.1922. The war memorial is made of a large natural stone from the Arapaepae hills and is set on a mound of other stones with steps leading to it. This memorial was later replaced.
