Oxford Street

Inscription on reverse reads: “Don Mr C Sims Post Office Res. upstairs. Oxford Street about 1912. Building next to P. Office pulled down about 1912 was a sweet shop run by the Dear family + next to it a tea rooms which had accommodation at the rear run by a Mrs Wilson. On the corner opposite the Levin Hotel was a stationers + book shop run by a Mr Fred Jones beyond that the fire station + fire bell.”

The top right shows a cyclist and a horse and trap on The Avenue. The bottom left shows a busy scene at the railway yards at Weraroa with Prouse’s sawmill in the background. The bottom right shows a group on the western hills overlooking Lake Horowhenua.

Inscription on reverse is very faint but begins: “Dear Mrs Ransom…..” A message follows but is too faint to read. “W. Hannan” has been written in blue ink across the message.

The Levin Hotel is on the southwestern corner of the intersection. The Oxford Street plane trees are encased in wooden frames. The street is unsealed and several horses with gigs are in the street.

Oxford Street, Levin, c 1912 . This photograph looks north fropm the south western corner of the intersection of Bath Street and Oxford Street. On the opposite corner is the Public Library which was opened at the end of 1911. In the centre of the intersection is a gas standard with two lamps. The eastern side of Oxford Street has numerous commercial businesses.
