Swimming Pool, Levin

Printed bottom of original, as caption: “Intereseted spectators.”

Message handwritten across top of original photo is almost unreadable and appears incomplete” .... [will write] you after the …. & tell you all the news.”

A very large crowd gathered around the edge of the pool during the opening of the Coronation Baths, Levin, 1911. At one the end of the pool is a corrugated iron shelter. In the background are a number of private residences.

‘Cheslyn Rise’, the home of the Adkin family, Queen Street East, Levin, c.1920. The two storied house was completed in 1899 and this photograph shows members of the family near the western side of the house.

Heatherlea Homestead

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “Heatherlea Homestead.”

Embossed mounting board.

Heatherlea Homestead, Heatherlea East, Levin. A weatherboard house with an iron roof with elaborate brick chimneys. There are verandahs on bothsides of the house which has its front door set between two bay windows. Each of the bay windows has three sash windows and coloured glass surrounds the front door. Wooden steps lead to the slightly recessed front door. Mrs Hector McDonald (Agnes), R A McDonald, her son, three unidentified women and two babies sit at the front of the house.

Andresen-Hofmann

Black and white print is fixed to piece of A5 paper. Inscriptio beneath photograp reads: “Hans Andresen’s corner of Union and Johnson St.”

Members of the Andresen and Hofmann families outside Hans Andresen’s property on the corner of Union and Johnson Streets, Foxton. Two Andresen men sit in horse drawn gigs while Dolly Andresen stands in front of a horse. The hofmann family stand to the right of the photograph and include from left to right:- J A Hofmann, Eric, Vin, Rhoda, Reg, and Mrs Hofmann.

Cottage & people beside Hokio Stream

Typed on piece of paper glued to back: “The cottage is where Jack Kiki and his wife and family lived. He sat on the bank all day. This is where the Gebbies lived, but from memory someone else commenced the remodelling before Gebbies moved there. Boys in their boat, Tom & George Kerslake. Circa; 1925-26 ? (Donated by Tom Kerslake)”

A small cottage alongside the Hokio Stream at Hokio Beach, with three unidentified women on a foot bridge over the stream and two boys, Tom and George Kerslake, in their boat. The cottage is described as where Jack Kiki and his family lived, and where the Gebbies lived at a later date.

Home of K Douglas, Weraroa Road

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “Built by K. Douglas. Weraroa Rd. Durham lived there.”

Mrs Douglas and her son pose outside their home in Weraroa Road. Built by Mr George Kenmer Douglas the weatherboard house has two distinctive domes. There are two verandahs, one facing north and the other facing west. The windows are of the sash type, and wooden steps lead up to the house. To the far right of the photograph a white cockatoo is sitting on a perch. This house is situated at 66 – 68 Weraroa Road, opposite Horowhenua College.

Snow at ‘Lakeside’, the residence of Hector Hugh McDonald, on what is now Moutere Road. The young woman is Flora McDonald eldest daughter of Hector Hugh and the dog is “Jock”. This photograph is taken looking north and the Te Maai ridge is in the background.
