Foxton Family Hotel

Inscription on reverse of mounted photograph reads: “Lent by Mrs Kirkcaldie. nee Marjorie Kebbel daughter of John Kebbell. Now given. Cook’s Family Hotel now known as the Foxton but of course re-built.”

Foxton Family Hotel, formerly the home of Thomas U Cook, in Gray Street, prior to 1892 when the building was demolished and a new hotel of the same name was opened on the present site in Main Street.

Oxford Street

Inscription on reverse reads: “Don Mr C Sims Post Office Res. upstairs. Oxford Street about 1912. Building next to P. Office pulled down about 1912 was a sweet shop run by the Dear family + next to it a tea rooms which had accommodation at the rear run by a Mrs Wilson. On the corner opposite the Levin Hotel was a stationers + book shop run by a Mr Fred Jones beyond that the fire station + fire bell.”

At the centre of the intersection is a gas standard with two lamps. The Post Office is on the left hand side and the Levin Hotel on the right hand side.

Plimmer Terrace, Shannon

Printed bottom of photo: “Plimmer Terrace. Shannon. No.3601.”

Written on back with black ballpoint pen: “B.P. Moynihan”

Letter written on back with black ink pen: “Dear Dick how are you getting on. How many eggs are you having now and how many meals are you having a day. I am writing a letter to Douglas Vickers. Goodbye from Alex.”

Plimmer Terrace, Shannon c.1920. This photograph looks south along the eastern side of Plimmer Terrace and shows the Bank of New Zealand (left), W. H. Gunning’s General Store, the Post Office in the centre distance and in the far distance the Club Hotel. Several children are outside the bank.

Queen Carnival Parade, Levin, 1941

Typed on paper (with Horo. Hist. Soc. letterhead) glued to back: “A Queen Carnival held in Levin in 1941 when the population was a mere 2790 raised 3179 pounds ($254,220) towards the Patriotic Funds to supply comforts to the army overseas. Here the N.Z. Air Force stationed at Kimberley parade with their queen Ellen McDonald. Other Queens were Maureen O’Conner – Citizen’s Queen and Barbara Blenkhorn – Business Queen.”

Queen Carnival Parade, Levin, 1941. N.Z. Air Force (stationed at Kimberley) parade with their carnival queen, Ellen McDonald. This photograph features a truck carring a large model aircraft with Ellen McDonald as the pilot, two uniformed women, two uniformed men and two lines of uniformed men marching either side of the truck. The truck is followed by children on bicycles and trolleys. The parade is moving north along Oxford Street. The Hotel Arcadia (on Bath Street and Oxford Street corner) is in the background.

Foxton Main Street Fire Damage, 1912

Photograph is attached to a piece of white paper which has the following inscription: “After the 1912 fires Walls erected a temporary shed. Presbyterian Church and old Town Hall can be seen at left. In foreground picket fence of the Methodist Church still stands.

Scene after fire on eastern side of Main Street Foxton in 1912. In the foreground the site of the fire on the western side of Main Street, also in 1912, has been partly cleared. The picket fence of the Methodist Church remains standing.Whytes Hotel is the two storied building on the eastern side of the street.

In the centre of the photograph is a horse and trap, and a youth leans on a bicycle chatting to two young girls. Two women and a girl have just walked past the general store, which doubles as a registry office for servants.

Oxford Street, early Levin, c.1890

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “[R.F. ?] Hinchcliff, 27 Walton Av. Waikanae.

Oxford Street Levin, taken from north of the Oxford Street / Queen Street intersection looking south c . 1890. The road is unsealed and narrows at what is now the Oxford Street / Bath Street intersection. A small cottage is on this site. in the distance towards Weraroa is a large two storied building, possibly the “Weraroa Hotel”. The Levin Hotel is the large building on the southern corner of Oxford Street and Queen Street West.

Penciled on back: “Oxford St. West. Levin Hotel.

The west side of Oxford Street, Levin, looking south from the Queen Street intersection. The building to the far right of the photograph is the Levin Hotel. A horse and covered cart stands outside the hotel facing south. Another horse drawn cart is further down Oxford Street, as is a man on a bicycle. In this photograph the plane trees (planted 1897) are quite small indicating that this photograph was probably taken in the early 1900s.

Manawatu Hotel, Foxton

Postcard donated by Mrs E.M.Wood 372 Oxford St, Levin

The “new” Manawatu Hotel, Foxton. A E Shadboldt was the proprieter at the time this photograph was taken. A horse, bicycles and a horse-drawn carriage are the featured means of transportation in this photograph. Four women stand on the upper floor balcony and a number of men stand on the footpath outside the two storied weatherboard building.

The western side of Oxford Street, north of the Queen Street / Oxford Street intersection, looking south c 1911. The road is unsealed and is lined by the plane trees which were planted in 1897. To the left of the photograph is the Levin Hotel and further south down Oxford Street are other commercial premises.
