Opening of Memorial Gates at Shannon School, 28 November 1940. This concrete arched gateway was erected to commemorate the school’s Golden Jubilee 1889 – 1939. A group of seven people gathered at school gates including from left to right:- an unidentified woman, Mr R.J. Law (Chairman Jubilee Committee), Mr E.J. Butt (Mayor), Mrs F. Jamieson, an unidentified woman, Mrs E.J. Spencer. In the front is Bob Gyde the youngest school pupil, who cut the ribbon to declare gates open.

Mr and Mrs John Davies' home at Koputaroa

Inscribed on back, “Mrs R A MacDonald, Winchester Street, Levin” and “Mrs Hector McDonald with Mr & Mrs J Davies Sympathy and Best Wishes 18 Sept 1902”

Large group of unidentified Maori and European men, women and children in front of weatherboard private residence and a large hedge.

John Davies is in the centre row slightly to the left of centre, dresssed in a frock-coat with a felt hat in his right hand. Hector Hugh McDonald is the third gentleman from the right in the back row, wearing a straw hat.

Inscription on front, “Mr & Mrs John Davies home at Koputaroa about 1900.” Inscriptions on reverse, ‘Mrs R A MacDonald, Winchester St, Levin.” and “Mrs Hector McDonald with Mr and Mrs J Davies Sympathy and Best Wishes 18 Sept 1902.”

Swimming Pool, Levin

Typed on piece of paper glued to back - Coronation Baths. Opening Day of the Levin Coronation Public Swimming Baths in 1911. Joseph Scott first into the baths. Fully dressed with lace-up boots. [added with blue ballpoint pen]

The crowd watches the first swimmer enter the water during the opening of the Coronation Pool, Levin in 1911. While some swimmers have already entered the pool others are taking off their clothing. The caption at the bottom of the photograph reads “First in bath for Mayors Prize, winner J Scott”.

State School, Levin

Stamped on back with blue ink – Horowhenua Historical Society….....

Pupils outside the main building of Levin School in Oxford Street post 1903. The wooden building with an iron roof and five brick chimneys faces east, and although a flagpole has been erected at the front of the school, the playground is unsealed with large rocks clearly visable.

Norwood School, Queen St., Levin, 1904

Mrs R Fitzherbert and her daughter Miss M Fitzherbert stand on the porch at the at the rear of this group of pupils from the Norwood School, Queen Street, Levin, 1904. Twenty-one of the twenty three pupils are girls with only two boys appearing in this photograph. The school was on the site of today’s ‘Village Green’ (2001) and was also known as Mrs Fitzherbert’s School.

Typed on piece of paper glued to back: “2. Boys at gardening work c1913. The instructor was M.W. Williams (in the white hat). The house, ‘Clematis Cottage’ was the Williams dwelling. Mrs Williams and son Raymond are pictured in the doorway. The house has since been demolished. Boys dormitory to the left of the cottage. (Alexander Turnbull Library – Williams collection)”

Boys gardening beside ‘Clematis Cottage’, Weraroa Boys Training Farm (later Kimberley Centre), Kimberley Road, Levin, c.1913. The man in the white shirt in this photograph is Mr M. W. Williams who was an instructor at the Training Farm. His wife and son Raymond, are standing in the doorway of the cottage. Information on the reverse of this photograph states that this building has been demolished. This is incorrect as “Clematis Cottage” became the Nurses’ Home at Kimberley Hospital and Training School and is currently (2001) used as the Staff Education Centre.

Four unidentified children pose for this outdoor portrait. The three boys all wear jackets and shorts with knee-length socks, and the small girl who shares a seat with one of the older boys is dressed in white with white knee-length socks and brown sandals. The four children are unidentifies but the names “Ian, Ronald, Tommy and Barbara” and their respective ages are written on the back of the photograph.

Levin School, Oxford Street

The main block at Levin School on the western side of Oxford Street looking south, 1903. The wooden building has an iron roof and 5 brick chimneys rise above the roofline. The playground area is unsealed and large rocks are clearly visable. The students in this photograph are in the main separated with boys to the left and girls to the right.

Opening of Coronation Swimming Baths

Inscription on reverse reads: “Dear JIm. We have here Levin’s new attraction. The Coronation Swimming baths. This was taken on the opening day and a very large crowd assembled to see them opened. I have taken on swimming and find it a very good exercise. We are having the Levin Show down here this week and also Worth’s Circus so things will be pretty lively. We have got some fine entries for the show this year. Marion is still in Wellington. Will be home next Sat. We are all quite well. Wilf”

This postcard shows the start of the 25 yards race for boys on the day the Coronation Swimming Baths were opened on the corner of Bath and Salisbury Streets in 1911.
