Penciled on back: “PNPL / D46 Opening of Reikorangi skimming station c.1902 -[but opening given as 1904 from Massey archives] Adjacent to P.O. site. From here, cream sent by horse transport to Waikanae and then by rail to Otaki. Back row 2nd from left, white beard, Alf Monk. Front row 4th from left : R. Stubbings. 3rd from right : Byron Brown.”

White Pine Milling, Levin district, c.1904

Paper with typed information: “PNDL/BF 8 c.1904 Felling White Pine in the Levin district. Tree on the right is of unusual size. White rectangular area between two jigger boards is a sign nailed to the trunk. The man at the base is holding a jigger board, three others in use. Copied from AJHR 1904 C-1 P.30”

Moving building to Levin School, 1904

Penciled on back: “1898 schoolroom from Central Development Farm was moved to Beach Road (Harvey’s Joinery site). Then called Weraroa School. In 1904, as shown in this picture, it was towed along Main Road to Levin School site, where it is still used as the library (NW corner of N. block). Slab fence on right is round Weraroa Domain. A corner of Swainson & Bevan store (Mako Mako Rd / Main Rd corner) appears right. ‘

A tractor towing a school building from the site of Weraroa School in Hokio Beach Road to the Levin School site in Oxford Street in 1904. In this photograph the building is on the main road, just going past the Weraroa domain which is surrounded by a slab fence.To the right Swanson and Bevan’s building can be seen behind the domain fence. On the left a couple travel southwards in a horse drawn gig.

This early 1900s photograph shows the Commercial and Farmers Club building on the eastern side of Oxford Street north of the Oxford Street Intersection. The Post Office is south of the intersection and in Queen Street a horse and trap are approching the intersection. Two women dressed in white blouses and dark skits with two children and a man are outside a verandahed shop. The centre of the intersection is marked by a gas standard lamp.

Mrs R Fitzherbert and her daughter Miss M Fitzherbert stand on the porch at the at the rear of this group of pupils from the Norwood School, Queen Street, Levin, 1904. Twenty-one of the twenty three pupils are girls with only two boys appearing in this photograph. The school was on the site of today’s ‘Village Green’ (2001) and was also known as Mrs Fitzherbert’s School.

Printed on back: “Photograph courtesy of Foxton Historical Society. C.T. EASTON’S BUTCHERY 1904. Mr Easton set up business opposite the cattle yards in Foxton. The beasts frequently caused havoc, and sometimes injury in the main street when they broke away while being ferried across the Manawatu River.”

Printed on back: “Photograph courtesy of Foxton Historical Society. RED HOUSE, FOXTON 1904. The Red House, on the corner of Whyte and Main Street is one of the few buildings to escape the fires which ravaged the township earlier this century. It was built in 1894 as a general store.”

Printed on back: “Photograph courtesy of Foxton Historical Society. FLAX WORKERS, FOXTON 1904. From the 1880’s onwards Foxton became known as the flaxmilling capitol of New Zealand. Fortunes were made and lost as the price of flax fibre fluctuated on the world market. A familiar sight on the outskirts of the town was the expanse of flax draped over rows of fences.”
