A great weekend celebrating Tararua Rodders 40th birthday started at the Levin Cobb and Co with registrations and then it was off on a mystery poker run.

Club president Nathan Davidson said the mystery run had more to it than met the eye.

The first challenge was to guess the weight of cars including driver and passengers at Koputaroa, then it was off to Foxton on State Highway 1, with a diversion under the Whirokino trestle bridge and onto Whirokino Road for an eighth of mile drag race competition.

From there, the convoy of cars made their way to Shannon and south to Ohau Playcentre for lunch and games, wheelbarrow racing, gumboot and piston throwing, apple bobbing and golf putting.

After the laugh break and a fantastic lunch thanks to the mothers from the play centre, the mystery run continued back towards Levin, stopping off at Tararua Road for a motokana, that turned into a burning rubber, screeching of tyres and howling V8 engines made for heaps of fun.

The day was finished off with a dinner and dance at the Cossie Club in Levin.

Tararua Rodders sway the judges

Tararua Rodders club members have scooped a number of awards at recent shows.

At this month's Street Rod Nationals in Taupo, Bryan and Wendy Kilsby's 1937 Ford Coupe won Best Nostalgia Vehicle. Last month the couple's red 1954 Ford Victoria, won the Favourite Ford Trophy at the Beach Hop at Whangamata.

"But you don't go to these events just for the prizes. You go for the great atmosphere and to catch up with people," Mr Kilsby said.

Fellow club member Warren Montgomery, who also won prizes at Whangamata, said members take great pride in their vehicles and love to parade them, especially at hot rod events where they can chat and share advice and experiences with other enthusiasts.

There is some light-hearted ribbing about what others are driving, but as long as vehicles are pre-1972 it does not matter what make or model, although most are from the United States.

Mr Montgomery and his wife, Diane, took their yellow 1947 Ford Jaibar truck to the Beach Hop and won the trophy for the warm-up party's Best Hot Rod as well as the Beach Hop Mayor's Trophy.

Club member Faye Lougher won awards for being the best dressed, in nostalgic outfits.

The Tararua Rodders has its own bi-annual show coming up in September, in Levin, and members are encouraging all local hotrod owners to enter.
