VINTAGE CAR & MACHINERY SHOW
( HOROWHENUA BRANCH)

SUNDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER 10am - 4pm
HOROWHENUA EVENTS CENTRE , VICTORIA STREET, LEVIN

A step back in motoring history part of clasic car show

By Peter Frankin Horowhenua Chronicle Friday, September 28, 2012
Over the past months members of the Horowhenua branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand have been busy organising the early times transpoet and
machinery that will allow people to step back in time and get a better appreciation of where our current day cars and machinery have come from.
On Sunday the door to events Centre will open all will be revealed as proud owners show the rewards of their long hours of labour restoring all sorts of
mechanical wizardry.
Club spokesman Alton Harrison said it has been a lot of work organising the exhibitsfor the Victoria street complex .Tomorrow will be a full on day getting
everything in place. " But it is enjoyable for everyone - we get to talk amongst ourselves about things we love ".
This weekend's show is the fifth the club has put on. Tjhe first was 38-years ago. Mr. Harrison said they have some very interesting displays this year,
with a holiday camp set up in part of one of the exhibition halls.
"There will be caravans and cars from the 1960s era, and we'll have the garage working, " he said.
At 11am and 1 pm a team from the Vintage car club will try to break the world record for assembling a Model T, from a pile of parts on the ground to running.
The currrent record is four minutes.
" The boys are getting close, so it will be interestin on the day," Mr Harrison said.

4/10/2012
A short note as to how the show went on the day.
A smaller than usual crowd on the day it seems we had clashed with other events, however well more than a 1000 people attended and were treated
to a spectacular performance by the Horowhenua Club on the assembly of a Model T Ford. This is very popular in United States and Canada and the only
recorded time was 3 minutes 17 seconds. This is was the time our team was out to beat. Beat it they did, in the morning a time of 3 minutes 8 seconds
was recorded by official time keepers. The second attempt in the afternoon was timed at 2 minutes 40 seconds, so we are claiming a world record.
Overal it was a very successful enjoyable day.
Peter D. Nightingale.

Combustion, but not as we know it

By STEVE GREEN
www.sportsimages.co.nz______

Even when it was built, back in the heyday of stationary engines, the Dynoil engine was unusual in that it would run on most flammable liquids with the exception of petrol and diesel.

It's most unusual feature, however, is not its fuel but rather what the engine does not have — no carburettor, no ignition magneto, no battery, no wires and no sparkplug.

It does have a primitive form of mechanical fuel injection, however there is no obvious way of igniting the fuel air mixture once it is in the cylinder. Instead, inside the cylinderhead there is a sort of Vee chamber going from the bottom of the head up into it to where the fuel injector is mounted vertically.

When running, the initial fuel mix is injected into the top side of this Vee and flows down into the engine barrel before the raising: piston squashes it raises to 450psi, at which pressure it spontaneously explodes and blasts back into the cylinder forcing the piston down the bore.

The next revolution of the engine is like a normal four stroke, flushing burnt gases put the exhaust valve.

This particular Dynoil engine has a little metal plate attached to say that it was built by the Burnoil Engine Co ofSouth Bend,Indianaunder licence from R.M. Hvid Co ofChicago,Illinoisand is engine number DO836.

It is one of a batch built over a six month period over the end of 1917 and the start of 1918.

Interestingly it also states 2.5 Horsepower at 5OOrpm, a very slow engine speed achieved with the help of a pair of heavy flywheels and a wide flat pulley for running machinery via a flat belt.

The engine itself is long stroke which produced more sheer torque than today's short stroke engines which make power with revs. The cast iron jacket around them that also acts as a water reservoir and heat dissipater and although there is no actual water pump, rather the water is circulated as different parts warm and cool.

An interesting feature of the exposed crankshaft is a little canister not much bigger than a box of matches mounted on the top side of the big end of the con rod. This little canister holds a supply of oil for the slowly spinning big end and lubricates it when the engine is running.

Now residing inFoxtonBeach, this engine was found on a farm in Helensville where it was saved from the scrap metal man, a piece of our country's early history now preserved for future generations thanks to a generous farmer and a keen vintage machinery enthusiast.

Current generations can get a closer look at it shortly when it will be on display at the Early Times Transport and Machinery.Centre,Victoria Street, Levin.

Run by the Horowhenua branch of the New Zealand Vintage Car Club, the show will be open from9am until 4pm, entry $5 adults. Proceeds from the show will be donated to charity.
