Moving building to Levin School, 1904

Printed on front of mounting board, top right, with black ink: “P 80”

Penciled on back: “1898 schoolroom from Central Development Farm was moved to Beach Road (Harvey’s Joinery site). Then called Weraroa School. In 1904, as shown in this picture, it was towed along Main Road to Levin School site, where it is still used as the library (NW corner of N. block). Slab fence on right is round Weraroa Domain. A corner of Swainson & Bevan store (Mako Mako Rd / Main Rd corner) appears right. ‘

A tractor towing a school building from the site of Weraroa School in Hokio Beach Road to the Levin School site in Oxford Street in 1904. In this photograph the building is on the main road, just going past the Weraroa domain which is surrounded by a slab fence.To the right Swanson and Bevan’s building can be seen behind the domain fence. On the left a couple travel southwards in a horse drawn gig.

Western side of Central Oxford Street, Levin

Western side of Oxford Street, Levin, looking north to Queen St. intersection. 1 B&W / Sepia tone ? postcard.

The street is unsealed and the plane trees are bare of leaves in this photograph which is possibly dated in the early 1920s. In the centre of the photograph two women push a baby’s pram across the street. Their clothing and the clothing of a young woman on the left of the photo suggest that this the early 1920s as their skirts are raised enough to show their ankles. There is a combination of traffic, some motor cars and some horse drawn vehicles. There is a lamp standard in the centre of the street and another at the intersection of Oxford and Queen Streets. Weraroa & Railway Station

Main Road at Weraroa showing the Weraroa Hotel on the corner of Ward Street, and the Levin Railway Station on the left in the distance. In the centre of the photo is a horse and trap, and a youth leans on a bicycle chatting to two young girls. Two women and a girl have just walked past the general store, which doubles as a registry office for servants, and there are others outside the hotel and other shops.

8 Staff members from Walls Bakery, Foxton pose for this photograph with their wares and their horses in this sepia toned mounted photograph. Four of the men are dressed for work in the bakery with long white arpons covering their clothes. Three of the men are sitting on horse-drawn gigs. They are wearing vests, trousers, shirtsleeves and straw hats. Beside them in wicker baskets are loaves of bread. To the right of the photograph stands a man dressed in a vest, trousers, shirtsleeves and a bowler hat. The names of some of the men in the photograph are inscribed on the reverse.

Members of the Andresen and Hofmann families outside Hans Andresen’s property on the corner of Union and Johnson Streets, Foxton. Two Andresen men sit in horse drawn gigs while Dolly Andresen stands in front of a horse. The hofmann family stand to the right of the photograph and include from left to right:- J A Hofmann, Eric, Vin, Rhoda, Reg, and Mrs Hofmann.

Oxford Street, north of the Queen Street intersection, looking south,c.1906. In the centre of the intersection is a gas standard with a wooden ladder against it. The Levin Hotel is on the southwestern corner of the intersection. The Oxford Street plane trees are encased in wooden frames. The street is unsealed and several horses with gigs are in the street.

Both the fence and gates are made from wooden pickets. There are three gates which are painted white, double gates and a small gate to the left of the main gates.Stand of native timber in the background with some areas of felled bush .

Opening of Levin Public Library, 1911

People gathered at the intersection of Bath Street and Oxford Street for the opening of the Levin Public Library, 1911. The loan building stands on the north western corner of the intersection. In the centre foreground is a horse drawn buggie with very large wheels.
