Taken at Hokio Beach. Close to where I would go white baiting with my nana and grandad as a child.

  #CaptureYourHorowhenua is a district-wide amateur photography competition that encourages Horowhenua residents to showcase what they love about their district. The images are exhibited at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō, and the winner is decided by public vote.

Opening first traffic bridge, Hokio Beach, 1931

Typed on piece of paper glued to back: “Opening of the first traffic bridge over the Hokio Stream at Hokio Beach by Mayor Charles Blenkhorn c.1931. This was built with volunteer labour assisted by the County Council who supplied old bridge timber & some labour. Finance was raised by contributions. (photo donated by Mrs Harvey)”

Opening of the first traffic bridge across the Hokio Stream at Hokio Beach, 1931. The bridge was opened by the Mayor of Levin, Mr Charles Blenkhorn. At the time this photograph was taken, the bridge had not been declared “open”, as a ribbon runs across the bridge on the township side. A number of people are pictured using the footbridge north of the road bridge.

Hokio Beach Settlement and Stream

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “Hokio Beach. Mr David Foster driving his car 50 or 60 yrs ago. Road Bridge built where foot bridge is shown.”

Mr David Foster driving his car through the Hokio Stream at the place where the road bridge is now (2001). Three private houses are in the background and a footbridge crosses the stream behind the car.

Kerslakes' Cottage Hokio Beach

Hokio Beach Township

Typed on paper glued to back: “Hokio Beach 19. From information given to Miss Picken, the coach accommodation house was on the north side of Hokio Road near the intersection of Hunua Road. Between the four power poles, Rod McDonald in ‘Te Hekenga’ wrote that a small hill arose by the Hokio Stream & the accommodation house was at the base of the hill. (Photo by Miss Picken 1977 : Librarian 1965 onwards).”

The western view of Hokio Beach School at Hokio Beach Township in 1977. Information on reverse of photograph gives this as the site of the accomodation house run by Hector McDonald Snr, and his wife, Agnes.

Cottage & people beside Hokio Stream

Typed on piece of paper glued to back: “The cottage is where Jack Kiki and his wife and family lived. He sat on the bank all day. This is where the Gebbies lived, but from memory someone else commenced the remodelling before Gebbies moved there. Boys in their boat, Tom & George Kerslake. Circa; 1925-26 ? (Donated by Tom Kerslake)”

A small cottage alongside the Hokio Stream at Hokio Beach, with three unidentified women on a foot bridge over the stream and two boys, Tom and George Kerslake, in their boat. The cottage is described as where Jack Kiki and his family lived, and where the Gebbies lived at a later date.
