Oxford Street

Inscription on reverse reads: “Don Mr C Sims Post Office Res. upstairs. Oxford Street about 1912. Building next to P. Office pulled down about 1912 was a sweet shop run by the Dear family + next to it a tea rooms which had accommodation at the rear run by a Mrs Wilson. On the corner opposite the Levin Hotel was a stationers + book shop run by a Mr Fred Jones beyond that the fire station + fire bell.”

Letter written on back with black ink pen: “Dear Dick how are you getting on. How many eggs are you having now and how many meals are you having a day. I am writing a letter to Douglas Vickers. Goodbye from Alex.”

Plimmer Terrace, Shannon c.1920. This photograph looks south along the eastern side of Plimmer Terrace and shows the Bank of New Zealand (left), W. H. Gunning’s General Store, the Post Office in the centre distance and in the far distance the Club Hotel. Several children are outside the bank.

Weraroa & Railway Station

Weraroa & Railway Stn. – (caption). 1 B&W postcard.

Main Road at Weraroa showing the Weraroa Hotel on the corner of Ward Street, and the Levin Railway Station on the left in the distance. In the centre of the photo is a horse and trap, and a youth leans on a bicycle chatting to two young girls. Two women and a girl have just walked past the general store, which doubles as a registry office for servants, and there are others outside the hotel and other shops.

Inscription on reverse is very faint but begins: “Dear Mrs Ransom…..” A message follows but is too faint to read. “W. Hannan” has been written in blue ink across the message.

Penciled on back: “17 CH Oxford St. Post Office. ‘

The eastern side of Oxford Street, looking south towards Bath Street c.1920. The businesses which line the street are:- the Post Office, J.E. Dean (‘This is Deans’), Mrs Wilson, W.M. Clark (Draper), and the Hotel Arcadia. The street is unsealed and bicycles and horses are the main form of transport.

Commemoration Service for Edward VII, 1910

Written with black ballpoint pen, bottom of photo – 102 12

Typed on piece of paper glued to back: “5. A civic occasion in the square, Levin. Probably [crossed out with blue ballpoint pen] services for the death of King Edward VII 1910, or else the coronation of King George V 1911. Boys training farm cadets in row near bottom of photograph.”

Commemoration, death of Edward VII, 1910. Taken from opposite the Post Office in Oxford Street looking east, a large crowd hold sheets of paper, possibly song sheets for singing during the service.

Oxford - Queen Street intersection looking south

Probably taken in the early 1900s this photo shows the intersection of Oxford and Queen Streets with a gas lamp standard in the centre of the intersection. A ladder is against the pole of the lamp standard. The Oxford Street plane trees have protective wooden barriers around them. A bicycle is propled against a pole on the south-eastern side of the intersection.
