Levin School Pupils, c.1900

Pupils from Levin School lined up by the southern entrance to the wooden building in Oxford Street. (This school opened in 1903). The schoolyard is unsealed and large stones are clearly visable on the ground in front of the group of children.

Main Road at Weraroa showing the Weraroa Hotel on the corner of Ward Street, and the Levin Railway Station on the left in the distance. In the centre of the photo is a horse and trap, and a youth leans on a bicycle chatting to two young girls. Two women and a girl have just walked past the general store, which doubles as a registry office for servants, and there are others outside the hotel and other shops.

Mrs R Fitzherbert and her daughter Miss M Fitzherbert stand on the porch at the at the rear of this group of pupils from the Norwood School, Queen Street, Levin, 1904. Twenty-one of the twenty three pupils are girls with only two boys appearing in this photograph. The school was on the site of today’s ‘Village Green’ (2001) and was also known as Mrs Fitzherbert’s School.
