Horowhenua Railway Stations

In 1881 the Wellington and Manawatu Company operated the first railway service between Wellington and Longburn (near Palmerston North) via the Horowhenua. Here are some photos of the stations in the Horowhenua (both past and present).

In 1908 the Government bought out the railway company and it part of the NZ Railways Department.

The stations in the Horowhenua area were:

  • Tokomaru
  • Makerua
  • Shannon
  • Kereru (Koputaroa)
  • Levin
  • Ohau
  • Manakau

Levin:

In the Cyclopaedia of New Zealand 1908:

'The Levin Railway Station is situated at the south end of the borough. It is a wood and iron building, and contains the usual offices and appointments. There are eight trains passing through the station daily, and the staff includes a station-master and two officials.'
