Inscription on reverse:

Inscription on reverse, "Hector McDonald (whaler) born in "Fraich Eaerrian" Heathery Isle (near Rothsey Bay) in the Isle of Bute. 1812".

Sailed to Tasmania with his family (aged 6 years) Family sailed in organised party under guidance of their chieftain. Hector’s family took up large block of land by the “Derwert River” The sea called – did not like farming – drifted over to N Z in whaling ship – landed at Kapiti Island in 1832.”
