The first photo shows Hector McDonald in a canoe, possibly the Hamaria on the Hokio Stream. Taken from the Te Maai ridge looking west. Eel weir in mid picture and Hector Jnr’s home “Lakeside” in the background. Inscription reads, “cf photo taken by Miss Picken in 1977 from same position”. The second photo is also taken from Te Maai ridge, but looking east. Inscription beneath photo, “Not this.”

Photo of Flora McDonald taken in a garden. Flora is wearing a dress which comes down to her ankles and has a wide hem. It appears to be of a sprigged material and has a collar with a white over-collar. A large white tie completes the outfit. Flora is also wearing a white underblouse, a straw hat with a wide brim, a dark coral [?] necklace and black leather boots. Her hair is down. In the background is a high wooden fence and a wooden power-pole. Bush covered hills are in the distance.

Inscribed on back, “Mrs R A MacDonald, Winchester Street, Levin” and “Mrs Hector McDonald with Mr & Mrs J Davies Sympathy and Best Wishes 18 Sept 1902”

John Davies is in the centre row slightly to the left of centre, dresssed in a frock-coat with a felt hat in his right hand. Hector Hugh McDonald is the third gentleman from the right in the back row, wearing a straw hat.

Flora & Gypsy, 1911 Show

Inscription on front reads:- “Flora & Gypsy Show 1911.”

Flora MacDonald seated in a gig and driving a horse (Gypsy). Flora is dressed in a dark jacket with a white blouse or cravat underneath, and a bowler hat. The lower portion of her clothing is not visible. The horse is facing away from the camera and is heavily harnessed and is wearing blinkers.

Inscription on reverse reads:- “Grandmother – Mrs Rigg – Wgton. Her daughter Mary Rigg (married Hector ). Flora McDonald (eldest daughter married Ranald A MacDonald). Daughter Mary MacDonald.”

Group of four unidentified persons in what appears to be a parade in Oxford St. Man in front on left hand side appears to have a flag wrapped around his shoulders. Man behind him is wearing a flat topped cap and heavy coat. The man to his right is partly obscured and is hatless. Man in front at right is wearing a jacket and waistcoat with a kerchief tied around his neck and a felt hat with a brim. He appears to be playing a “squeeze box”, however, movement has cause blurring of photograph.

Inscription on reverse, "Hector McDonald (whaler) born in "Fraich Eaerrian" Heathery Isle (near Rothsey Bay) in the Isle of Bute. 1812".

Sailed to Tasmania with his family (aged 6 years) Family sailed in organised party under guidance of their chieftain. Hector’s family took up large block of land by the “Derwert River” The sea called – did not like farming – drifted over to N Z in whaling ship – landed at Kapiti Island in 1832.”
