Opened by the Prime Minister Helen Clark in May 2007.
The interior of the building is decorated with work by local stained glass artist, June Gillies and painter Wendy Hodder.
Wendy Hodder's paintings focus mostly on the landscape, the hills, rivers, plains and the sea - the constant feature of our district. They represent the flow of water from small beginnings in the forest and hills to its meeting place within the ocean.
On the North Wall:
The carvings at the entrance to the building are by artist Hone Heke assisted by Pa Heke.
