Description

This carving depicts multiple landmarks from the district.

The town clock, an interpretation of the Council logo suspended in the mouth of our Tupuna (ancestors), symbolising the passing of knowledge from generation to generation. Then the morepork resting on top of the Pataka of Muaupoko which represents an abundance of food from the land and the kaitiakitanga (guardianship) of the land by its people. To the left stands the Muaupoko waka beside a representation of Hau the Maori explorer who named the places in our region.

Hau, meaning wind, holds the De Molen windmill, representing Nga Hau e Wha ( the four winds); a comparison to all cultures from the four compass points in Maori oratory. Below these are the huia bird, the toll bridge from Opiki and a horse and plough. At the base of this panel are a milk tanker, the Mangahao Dam an anchor and half boat representing the Hydrabad which rests on Waitarere beach and kaimoana from the beach.
