Nana Moffitt's Caramel Dumplings

This is a pudding recipe that I copied out from my Mum's cookbook when I was kid. I make it for my own children sometimes and they love it. I was telling my Mum recently how much the kids loved it and I told them it was their Grandmothers recipe, and she said: Oh no, its not mine, my Grandmother used to make it for us when I was a child!

So here is:

Nana Moffitt's Caramel Dumpling Recipe.

Sift together 2.5 cups of flour, 2 pinches of salt, 2/3rds cup of sugar and 3 teasps of baking powder. Then rub in 2oz of butter. Add 2/3 cup of milk and 2 teasp vanilla essence. Should be a wet scone or stiff muffin mixture.

Drop spoonsful into the boiling pot of sauce, put lid on and simmer 20 mins.

Sauce.

Combine 2ozs butter, 3 cups brown sugar, 2 pinches salt and 3 cups water in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil stirring constantly until boiling then turn heat down once dumplings added.

Especially yummy with vanilla icecream.

YOUR MOTHER'S
Old-fashioned Ginger-bread Cookies

TASTED BETTER than those you have now-a days. There is reason for it. If you dont think so, come to us for a quarter- pound of our grand JAMAICA GINGER: it is a light, golden, corn colour-not the muddy, (dark, brownish yellow kind you have generally bought. But when you come to the flavour, that's when the delight comes : it has the true, old-time Ginger flavour-all of the streogth without the twang and bite of that ground rope-red pepper combination. We suggest that if you need Ginger you buy It. from us, lay aside what remains on hand of the old Ginger you have been using, and see if in taste and colour ours does not outshine the old one. If not, bring it back. Ours costs lOd the quarter-pound, 3/- the pound.

"Why the Levin Meat, my pretty maid?"
"Quality's best, sir," she said.

Their meat, which will bake, boil or fry,
Is delicious in pudding or pie,
The quality you can easily tell -
Whilst others shrink theirs will swell.
Their stock it always looks so plump,
Just try a steak or chop (say rump).

And then their legs and loin of veal,
the shoulder, neck or breast,
Are taken from a fatted calf - one of the very best,
While briskets, they're so brisk themselves - so full of energy,
This is the meat to give you health and love of jollity.
