New Zealand Shipping Co. fire, 1933. This photograph was taken on Tuesday 14 November 1933 at about 11am looking across Main Street, Foxton. A fire is in the large wooden building behind the Foxton Public Library (left) and Council Chambers (centre) with a Service Station on the right.

Printed bottom left of photo, as caption – Oxford Street, Levin. N.Z.

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “According to Scott Aitken (son) Ken Aitken occupied the shop (now Bernina Sewing Centre No.172 Oxford St.) from 1909 to 1912 when he shifted to the west side Oxford St. (now south end 1/3 Deka No.213 Oxford St.)”

Oxford Street, Levin, c 1912 . This photograph looks north fropm the south western corner of the intersection of Bath Street and Oxford Street. On the opposite corner is the Public Library which was opened at the end of 1911. In the centre of the intersection is a gas standard with two lamps. The eastern side of Oxford Street has numerous commercial businesses.

Carnegie Free Public Library, Levin

Penciled on back of photocopy: “Levin Carnegie Free Library. Built 1911 demolished 1967. Photo after Municipal Building built 1926.

The Carnegie Free Public Library on the north western corner of the Bath Street and Oxford Street intersection. This concrete building with a tile roof was built in 1911 and demolished in 1967. Behind the library are the offices of the Levin Borough Council, and the Regent Theatre.
