Opening Levin Carnegie Free Library, 29.11.1911

Typed on paper glued to back: “Opening of the Levin Carnegie Free Library 29/11/1911 Opened by Sir Joseph Ward, Premier. Entirely financed by Carnegie grant. Built by Mayer and Illingworth at a cost of 1450 (pounds), $2900. Sited on the north west corner of Bath and Oxford streets. Demolished March 1965. Brenmuhls and Warnocks shops are now on the site. Photo taken by Joseph Scott with a Brownie Box camera, Kodak.”

Written on back with black pen: “1981, Page 89. Chronicle Supplement.”

Opening of the Levin Carnegie Free Library, 29 November 1911. This library was situated on the north western corner of the intersection of Oxford Street and Bath Street.

Taken from the upstairs verandah of the Grand Hotel on the corner of Oxford and Durham Streets, looking south down Oxford Street, this photograph shows a number of motor cars taking part in the Armistice Day Peace Parade, 13 Nov. 1918.

Beer break for workers building bridge over Mangaore Stream on Hennessy Road, Shannon. Among those in the photograph, J Hennessy is 2nd from the left, and W Moynihan has his back to the camera and is handing out the beer. The baby is James Moynihan who was later a Columbian missionary in the Phillipines.

Loading milk cans into railway van, Manakau

Penciled on back - Early morning at Manakau as farmers unload milk into vas for transport to Wellington. A special trains runs from Ohau to Paekakariki & collects van load of milk from Ohau.

Loading milk cans into railway van, Manakau Railway yard. This photograph was taken early in the morning as farmers unload milk into vans for transport to Wellington. A special train ran from Ohau to Paekakariki and collected van loads of milk from Ohau.

Levin Railway Station, c.1920. Situated on the eastern side of Oxford Street in Weraroa, this photograph shows the wooden building with an iron roof with the main entrance opening onto Oxford Street. In this photograph the road is unsealed but four early model cars are in front of the building.

Post Office, Levin, c.1921

Levin Post Office, on the south – eastern corner of the intersection of Oxford Street and Quee Street, Levin, c.1921. Two men ride their horseswhile another drives his buggy. Two cars are shown in Queen Street, while bicycles lean against the building. Three men are leaning on a lampost outside the front entrance to the building.

1935 Cadillac

Queen Street East

Written on back with black ballpoint pen: “Cambridge St. – Queen St. intersection. Late 1920’s. Shop verandah with Box on it known as ‘Chocolate Box’ & one next to it with shaded Queen St. facing sign has ‘Saddler’. The one across Cambridge St. with angled doorway is unknown. Car on extreme right outside what then was ‘Bonners Garage’. Beyond 2nd or so building on left & back a bit was wood & coal yard.

Penciled on seperate paper – Comments from John De Bonnaire, Julie Innes’ son. 26/07/00 Julie Innes – lived in Levin. Married about 1928 and moved to Palmerston North. She had an interest in photography as a hobby.

Queen Street East. 1 B&W photo print.

Inscription on reverse identifies this as showing the Cambridge Street – Queen Street intersection. One early car is parked on the wrong side of the road to the right, and a second car is in the distance travelling towards the Tararuas. A railway crossing sign is on the left hand side of the road. A shop known as “The Chocolate Box” is on the immediate left hand side of the street.
