Two fourpenny stamps from an old age pensioner…..and a cheque for [Pounds]1,000! from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous! This is the range of contributions now pouring into British banks for the Pakistan Relief Fund. This picture taken in the London headquarters of a major bank where thousands of letters are being opened, shows a senior official with the two widely differing contributions both of which arrived in the 77 sacks of letters received in the first five days of the appeal. The donations, 70% of them anonymous, includes cash, cheques, money orders, stamps and even jewellery. Some of the envelopes also contain offers from doctors, engineers and others to volunteer for work in the disaster area. Based on their previous experience of appeals on this scale, bank experts are estimating that the total will eventually come to about [Pounds]800,000.
