Main Street, Foxton 1906-7

Inscription on reverse reads: “8.9.08 To The F- P- Thanks for the P C It is no use telling me to tell ab. anything, you should have sent it to his girl not me. N says if she gets a letter written tonight it will be a struggle. Good night M K “

The postcard was sent to Mr F H Hemicksen, Railway Station, Waitara.

Postcard of Main Street Foxton taken in 1906 or 1907. The scene shows business premises on one side of the main street which is unsealed. This postcard was posted on 8.9.1908 and has personal note on the back.

Businesses with signs readable in original photo (left – right) - H. Walkley – General & Fancy Drapery, Gentlemen’s Complete Outfitter, Ladies & Children’s Outfitter. E.J. August – Furniture Upholsterer & Undertaker, agent for E. Collie & Dresden Piano Co. W.M. Clark – Importer (Estd. 1834), Draper, Mercer, Hatter. ? ? ? – Dressmaking. J.F. Smith – Livery & Bait Stable.

Commercial properties on the eastern side of Oxford Street, Levin, c.1907. From the left is the business of H. Walkley who ran a general and fancy drapery from 1905 to 1925 on this site. Mr E August ran a furnishing factory and shop in conjunction with an undertakers business from 1907 in the shop to the right (south) of Walkleys’. W.M. Clark operated a drapery and menswear store from 1892 in the next shop to the right.

Oxford - Queen Street intersection looking south

Probably taken in the early 1900s this photo shows the intersection of Oxford and Queen Streets with a gas lamp standard in the centre of the intersection. A ladder is against the pole of the lamp standard. The Oxford Street plane trees have protective wooden barriers around them. A bicycle is propled against a pole on the south-eastern side of the intersection.
