Mrs R Fitzherbert and her daughter Miss M Fitzherbert standing at the rear of their pupils, on the porch of the school. Twenty one of the twenty three pupils are girls with only two boys in the photograph.

Hughes Family Portrait (outdoors)

Written on back with black ballpoint pen & blue pen: “Harry J. Hughes (deceased), Gertrude (Gwendoline) Hughes (deceased), son James Hughes (deceased 1985, aged 72). Harry Hughes bought bakery at corner of Oxford St. & Devon St. in 1915 from Joseph Scott, baking there until 1920, then selling business only, to McLean. Hughes bought business back in 1924, operating until 1935, when Phelps & Wenham operated it until 1968, when Bridewells Bakery Palm. Nth bought the business soon closing the bakery, using it for some yearsfor distribution of bread from Palm. Nth. Hughes kept ownership of property with it passing ultimately to son James. Property sold in 1968 to Hudson & Burnham for use as a used car yard. F.C. Swanwick.”

Harry, Gertrude and their son James Hughes, along with their dog, pose on the rock-lined path outside a wooden cottage. Mr Hughes is wearing a shirt and a short tie, and a jacket and trousers. He has his left hand on the shoulder of his son James, who is wearing a woolen pullover with a tie, shorts, and is barefooted. Mrs Hughes is wearing a white blouse, a long black (full) skirt and black shoes. Her hair is wound in a bun on top of her head.

Group of 14 unidentified men outside “The Byko” shop (J. Phillips) on the north-eastern corner of the Queen Street / Oxford Street intersection. There are ten bicycles in this photograph, and many of the men are wearing cloth caps. Five unidentified boys and a black dog are looking on.

Beached Whale, Foxton Beach

Inscription on reverse reads: “Stranded whale Foxton Beach 21.7.13 Note boys sliding on ribs – their mothers couldn’t get the smell out of their clothes and they required numerous baths. Note also woman on right with handkerchief to her nose. Negative at Palmerston North Public Library. Presented by Joan Rankin”

A number of people examine a stranded whale on Foxton Beach, 1.7.1913. Four boys have climbed onto the remains of the whale, and according to a note on the reverse of the photograph; “Their mothers couldn’t get the smell out of their clothes and they required numerous baths.”

Inscription on front of one postcard reads: “Saturday instead of Thursday. F V E” and is addressed on the reverse to ” G W Lennan, Naumai, College Street, Palmerston North”.
