knife when hubby arrived to visit. When he saw her and what she was brandishing, he put his hands on his prized possession and said there would not be any more babies. And there wasn't!

From a Great-Grandmother
I had three children at Foxton Maternity Home. (1951, 1954, 1958)What a wonderful place.
The Staff were so kind when I was in labour with my daughter Raewyn.
We lived in Kaihinau Road, Makerua and had a Model T Ford vehicle. My husband Tom was turning on the lawn.. .weather was shocking.. .of course the car became stuck in the mud! Luckily we got to the Home in time!
I had nipple trouble and had to wear a shield. Again, staff were so kind.
Meals were very good.
(I had three children in Levin)
Thank you to Marcia Proctor
(Marcia is one of 25 women who recently received an International Woman's Day recognition Award (2005) for unpaid work.) (Marcia's community work career began in 1953).
Spoken With Fondness For The, 'Doc'.I would leave my wife at the Maternity Home and take off home to look after our other children. We (men) didn't stay for the births in those days.
Eventually there would be a tap on my bedroom window and Doctor Teppett would call out, "Don't get-up, you've put another spout on!" (Six sons, after one daughter). I'd think, "Thank God, he didn't come in, 'cos he'd pinch me packet of cigs..."
