Embroidered Banner – “Waitarere”, 1950

Mounted with stainless steel rod and rope cord at top, so it can be readily hung on wall or lecturn etc. Black velvet background with orange-gold fringe at bottom. Name WAITARERE embroidered at top. Women’s Institute emblem with motto “For Home and Country” embroidered at centre. Flower – Gazania (wild beach flower) embroidered at bottom.

Made in 1950 when the movement was known as the “Women’s Institute” (later renamed the “Country Women’s Institute” in 1952).

Waitarere Women’s Institute was formed in 1939.

Medal (pin) was pinned to the banner (see – #.0020a).

Cloth storage holder with metal zipper at one end and Waitarere CWI written with coloured marker pens. The position of the zipper makes it difficult to get the banner into the bag although it is not too difficult to remove.
