7/3/2013  The committee has been very busy. The proramme has been organised, and dates verified.

Below is the information for registering, costs involved etc. and details of the programme and functions.

The weekend 21st & 22cnd June 2013 has come and gone, the Jubilee celebrations were held and what a
   huge success they were.
More than one hundred pupils attended the functions, it was just one huge enjoyable and successful week
   end.
To follow during the next few weeks, approx. two hundred photos of the pupils and functions that
happened during the jubilee will be posted on this site.

The date is now Tuesday 22 cnd October 2013 and the school held a dedication ceromony, to celebrate
the donation of a beautiful ceramic and wooden Totem Pole at the entrance way to the school. There was
a good turnout of past and present pupils and parents at the cermony. Information and photographs taken
at the ceremony are shown at the end of this site.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPEND DURING THE WEEKEND

Friday, the weather was atrocious, there having been a storm over most of New Zealand, heavy snow falls
and rain over most of the South Island and central North Island. Some saying it was as bad as the Wahine
storm on
10
April 1968.
Friday 9a.m.

The Committee, comprising of Lorraine McLeavey (Williams), Nan Sterne (Swainson), Pauline Masters (Bryant),
Matt Fogden, Penny Bertelsen (Bregmen), Henry Phillips, Juliana Mansveldt Chairperson BOT and Katie Woodruffe
Chairperson PTFA, arrived to set up the hall, arrange the seating and tables, and put up decorations, flowers ectera.

Due to the inclement weather it was decided to have all
the
functions at the hall and not split between the hall and
school, which was very successful.
Equipment was moved from the school and set up in
the hall, after much hard work, the hall looked a treat and
ready for registrations and meet and greet starting at 3.30
pm. People started arriving to register, during the afternoon
snacks, finger food, drinks, coffee and tea was served.
Pupils mixed around, reminiscing and had a great time.
Formalities completed around 9.30pm.

Saturday 10am.

The Committee was back at the hall and due to the
inclement weather, set up to have all the formalities in the
Hall. Many people arriving after lunch, in readiness to start
the afternoon programme. Lots of excited ex pupils and
parents standing around reminiscing and meeting their old school friends, having a great time.
During the week end a big TV screen was installed, and a slide show was running the whole time, showing more than
two hundred photos from 1888 to 2013 past and present pupils. This proved very popular. Also, many catalogues of photos
and newspaper clippings were viewed and read. Unfortunately a lot of photos are missing names so ex pupils were asked
to help identify the unnamed pupils. Also some class photos are missing also. The Manakau School PTFA provided a
beautifully presented, scrumptious home baked afternoon tea for everyone. The chatter and noise level had to be heard
to be believed.
The program for the afternoon, was a Welcome to all, especially, the Hon. Nathan Guy, MOP for Otaki, Minister of Primary
Industries and his
Family, who then said a few words.
The present day pupils sang the national anthem with great pride. Pauline Masters spoke about the school and history
of Manakau.
Then introduced the guest speaker, Principal Paddy Sannazzaro. He spoke of the success and going forward
for the school.
The cutting of the cake, was performed by Mrs. Trix Bryant (Hazlitt) and Mrs. Della Mather ( nee Mark) the two oldest ex
pupils and Zarnia Watson, youngest Pupil, and Nathan Guy.
Then the children entertained with more singing. There were the decade photos, the first
being 1030 - 1940, the photographer, Athol Corbett
was kept busy controlling everyone.
Approximately at 3.30 pm a 53 seater bus arrivedand took ex pupils for a tour of Manakau
village and
District which was hosted by John Page who gave a brief history
of the District, which was enjoyed by all.

5.30 - 6.30

The start of the Happy hour, by this time most of the people had arrived or stayed on for the evening Dinner and
once again
the hall was a buzz again with everyone still reminiscing.
6.30 pm onwards. Bobby Miratana gave a karakia which was followed by an informal dinner, served by Raewyn's Catering
from Levin, which was absolutely brilliant with plenty of food and variety to suit everyone's needs. During the evening music
was provided by Mr. Tip Tekira from Levin who played appropriate music for the times, adding to the delight of the crowd.

In between courses Mr. Tong Young, (being from one of the earliest Chinese families to settle in Manakau), gave a very
interesting story of his life in the1930's.
Rangi Ransfield, Priscilla Langtry (Haigh) and Phillipa Martin (Gordon), told funny incidents that had happened in their
childhood years in Manakau.
It was a wonderful day which went far too quickly. A great week end that was had by all. Sunday morning the Committee
met at the Hall and cleaned up and put
 everything back where it belonged.
There has been lots of phone calls, emails and letters of appreciation of the weekend, which makes all the hard work
worthwhile.

At the completion of the 125 th Jubilee celebrations reporter Margaret Andrews of The Otaki Mail published this report.

ManakauSchool celebrated its 125th Jubilee last weekend; 125 years lo the clay since it first opened its door onJune 21 1888.The two day event
began with nibbles and natter, meeting up with other former pupils and staff on Friday afternoon and into the evening. The big day was Saturday.
The afternoon began with the formal session of speeches, photographs and cutting the jubilee cake, iced in bright green, singing by the present
day pupils and bus tours around the Manakau area after a sumptuous afternoon tea, the tea was served in bone china cups and saucers. The day
concluded with an informal dinner back at the Manakau Hall.

Jubilee organiser and former pupil, Pauline Masters gave a brief history of early Manakau, from the first land sales in 1885 and the beginning of
the village, the first post office opening in 1887 and the school opening, at the home of the Whiley family in North Manakau Road in 1888. Among
the pupils from the 1930's were Trix Bryant aged 92 who came from Masterton and Della Mather 91, from Ohau. It was their task to cut the birthday
cake assisted by youngest present pupil, five year old Zarnia Watson and Otaki Member of Parliament, Nathan Guy. "For most of you or all of you,
you're coming home to celebrate our 125th birthday," principal and guest speaker, Paddy Sannazzaro said.
He spoke of the Education Department making Otaki Collegea Form One to Six/ seven school in 1971 and how Manakau's roll subsequently
decreased. Over the years the roll fluctuated up and down, he said. "During 1983-84 I taught here as a young teacher and came back as principal
in 2008.
At that time there were rumors of Manakau School closing, so I made a commitment with new teacher, Mel West to give the school four
years, to make the school a fun place to be, we even allowed tree climbing!"
High expectations were set for all pupils and those expectations were achieved. This year they have recapitated the year seven - standard five/form
one class and will retain them next year as the first year eight/form two class in 42 years."With the ever changing education environment we believe
ManakauSchoolwill be here for the next 125 years!" he said.

The children opened the afternoon's programme singing the National Anthem and later gave a rendition of a current school song, Move Down the
Bus. Although 110 people had registered for the weekend, several were unable to make with the stormy weather and others turned up instead, 100
were booked in for dinner on Saturday night. Mr' Guy congratulated the school on its amazing progress over the last five years. "In my view you have
turned the school around in about five years. There were about 30 children when you came, now there are over 80," he said.

In the lead up to the jubilee, the pupils have been creating a memorial pillar too many of the former pupils. The stones and bricks used in the
plinth came from the original school site inNorth Manakau Road.

The opening official opening of the Manakau School 125 th Jubilee 21st june 2013
The opening speech given by Mrs Pauline Masters ( nee Bryant )

We would like to extend to you all a very big welcome to the 125th Manakau School Jubilee, the oldest school in the
Horowhenua - especially those who have travelled, we have three ex pupils from Australia, welcome home - what an
honour to have you here.

We are privileged, also, to have in our presence the Hon
Nathan Guy MOP for Otaki, Minister of Primary Industries,
who is going to say a few words and help with the cutting
of the cake.
Some of you would ask "why have a Jubilee in
the middle of
winter?" Well yesterday the 21st June 1888
was the first day of
school in the Whiley Homestead, 2nd
houseon the right up North
Road. Manakau came into
existence when Te Rauparaha migrated
from Kawhia to
occupy this part of the country. The name was
given
because the original inhabitants fled before he arrived and
crossed the Waikawa River. It is the only place on record
that
he named personally on this Coast. Mana means power
and Kau
means a crossing or ford. Would you believe in
1840 the
Waikawa and Ohau Rivers were one and the mouth
was at Manakau Beach
now known as Waikawa Beach, (Waikawa means "bitter water") but in 1840 there was a massive
earthquake and the 2 rivers
were divided which caused the disappearance of the Manga Pirau Lake, but Papaitonga
 Lake remained .

It is amazing when there is an incident in Manakau, the media reference is "so many kilometers north of Otaki" or"
south of  Levin".

Our thoughts and appreciation must be remembered for the early settlers, namely the Bevan, Atkins and Staples
families who purchased native land here in 1885. A year later the Manawatu Railway Company sold sections of land ranging
from 1 1/4 -10 3/4 acres - this was the beginning of Manakau. In 1887 the Post Office opened.

During these 125years the Manakau people have celebrated the Manakau School with much pride and passion, a Golden
Jubilee, 1938, Diamond Jubilee, 1948, 75th Jubilee, 1963,90th Jubilee, 1978, Centenary 1988, 121st Jubilee 2009 and now
125th years.
What a record. There are several ex pupils here today who have attended many of these with great pride, including two
ladies here today who are in their nineties, Trix Bryant (Hazlitt) and Della Mather (Mark), we thank you for making the effort
to come out in the cold to help us celebrate, this wonderful occasion, we will ask you shortly to help
with the cutting of the
cake with the youngest pupil of the school, Zarnia Watson and Nathan.
Today we are very proud of our heritage and to present to you all, a wonderful school, which is as modern and up to date
with the latest technology, but still retains its lovely country atmosphere, thanks to the dedicated teachers and staff headed
by Principal, Paddy Sannazzaro.

Feel free to have a wander around and see all the great work the pupils have done. In dedicating
this week end the Pupils and Staff have spent a lot of time and effort to mount the names of the first
pupils and present day pupils on the bollards just inside the gates. This is a wonderful tribute for
the tremendous efforts of our predecessors, who had the drive, guts and initative to develop the
school, churches, hall etc. or as we say to day the "infrastructure." The stones and bricks are of
significance as they come from the school and the original School up North Road, the Jubilee
Committee is going to get a plaque and set in one of the stones in remembrance of you all. A
dedication ceremony is planned for a later date.
A big thanks to the Committee, comprising, Lorraine McLeavey, Nan Sterne, Penny Bertelsen,
Matt Fogden, Henry Phillips, Principal, Paddy Sannazzaro, Chairperson of the BOT, Juliana
Mansveld, and Chairperson of the PTA, Katie Woodruffe, for all their hard work in helping
organizing this event.

Secondly to Paddy and his Staff, Pupils and Parents for being so involved in such a special
occasion.

This is the report printed in The Otaki Mail News Paper dated 26th June 2013, the report and photograph

By MARGARET ANDREWS_____________

ManakauSchoolcelebrated its 125th Jubilee last weekend, 125 years lo the clay since it first opened its door onJune 21 1888.

The two day event began with nibbles and natter, meeting up with other former pupils and skill'on I'Yiday afternoon and into the evening. The big day was Saturday. The afternoon began with the formal session of speeches, photographs and cutting the jubilee cake, iced in bright green, singing by the present day pupils and bus tours around the Manakau area after a sumptuous afternoon tea, the tea was served in bone china cups and saucers. The day concluded with an informal dinner back at the Manakau Hall.

Jubilee organiser and former pupil, Pauline Masters gave a brief history of early Manakau, from the first land sales in 1885 and the beginning of the village, the first post office opening in 1887 and the school opening, at the home of the Whiley family in
North Manakau Roadin 1888.

Among the pupils from the 1930's were Trix Bryant aged 92 who came from Masterton and Delia Mather 91, from Ohau. It was their task to cut the birthday cake assisted by youngest present pupil, five year old Zarnia Watson and Otaki Member of Parliament, Nathan Guy.

"For most of you or all of you, you're coining home to celebrate our 125th birthday," principal and guest speaker, Paddy Sanezzaro said.

He spoke of the Education Department makingOtakiCollegea Form One to Six/ seven school in 1971 and how Manakau's roll subsequently decreased. Over the years the roll fluctuated up and down, he said. "During 1983-84 I taught here as a young teacher and came back as principal in 2008. At that time there were rumours of Manakau School closing, so I made a commitment with new teacher, Mel West to give the school four years, to make the school a fun place to be, we even allowed tree climbing!"
High expectations were set for all pupils  and those expectations were achieved.

This year they have recapitated the year seven - standard five/form one class and will retain them next year as the first year eight/form two class in 42 years.

"With the ever changing education environment we believe Manakau School will be here for the next 125 years!" he said.

The children opened the afternoon's programme singing the National Anthem and later gave a rendition of a current school song, Move Down the Bus.

Although 110 people had registered for the weekend, several were unable to make with the stormy weather and others turned up instead, 100 were booked in for dinner on Saturday night.

Mr' Guy congratulated the school on its amazing progress over the last five years. "In my view you have turned the school around in about five years. There were about 30 children when you came, now there are over 80," he said. In the lead up to the jubilee, the pupils have been creating a memorial pillar to many of the former pupils. The stones and bricks used in the plinth came from the original school site in North Manakau Road.

Dedication Speech ; By Pauline Masters ( Read by P. Sannazzaro )
Firstly my apologies for not being here today, I am in Ireland somewhere.
The committee would like to most sincerely thank, all those who helped in some way of making the Jubilee
a great success, we have had lots of messages of thanks for a great week end, even though the weather
was horrible it didn't deter people from attending.
We would also like to thank Dean Murray, the custodian
of the School for erecting  these Totem Poles, they are amazing and Dean we know you worked under extreme
difficulties to have these erected in time. The bricks are from the present school and the three stones have come
from the original school onNorth Road. On the totem poles are the names of the first day pupils in 1888, the
caricatures of present day pupils and the names of the teachers and staff. Also, a big thank you to Paddy, his
Staff and Pupils who participated in making the tiles. The plaque and poles have been donated by the School
Jubilee Committee, namely Henry Phillips, Lorraine McLeavey, Nan Sterne, Penny Bertelsen, Matt Fogden, Paddy
Sannazzaro, Juliana Mansvelt, a great group to work with and need to thank them for all  their time and effort.

You have made history in Manakau that will be here for ever, and must feel very proud of your efforts. Well done.

I think it is just an  example of the spirit in Manakau and we need to thank and remember our ancestors who arrived and developed
Manakau in the 18 hundreds they would be very proud that  this spirit
is being upheld and being passed down through the generations.
Today we are very lucky to have this wonderful country school still operating in the way it is, with the modern technology and
facilities that are available to the pupils. So many
country schools have been closed, due to the economic situation. But this
school remains prosperous due to the hard work of Teachers, Board of Trustees and the Parent
Teachers and Friends Association,
this is proof of what Manakau is made of.
Hope you all have a lovely afternoon and my thoughts will be with you     Pauline Masters.

Address by Chairperson Board of trustees:   Mrs Juliana Mansvelt

          Tena koutou katoa,
Kia Ora and welcome to all our tamariki, whanau and friends, Kuia, Kamatua, and distinguished guests. In the
speech read by Paddy, Pauline Masters has
talked about the historical components of the 'totem' sculpture here.
Talking with Richard Orzecki, perhaps Po Korero is an appropriate name for this piece.
I really like this term, which
reflects the purpose of the sculpture comprising talking poles which speak to the past and to the present. As I thought
    last night
about what I would say today, I also reflected on the three poles that comprise this monument. These three
poles are also a representation of the partnership
we have betweenManakauSchool, Wehi Wehi marae and the wider
Manakau Community. And so it is wonderful that we have representatives of all thre
 groups here today.
It is special, to be celebrating this dedication on this the day that ManakauSchool opened on this site 125 years ago.
Manakau School Board of Trustees is very
grateful for all those who contributed to this monument: to the work of
Pauline and the School Reunion committee, our fabulous school staff and teachers to
 Rod Graham and helpers Otaki
Pottery club and Creative New Zealand for covering the costs of firing. Our thanks also to Dean Murray who helped put
    the fixture
together in the rain! This dedication is an important event in the life of Manakau school, not only because it
is a reminder of the school's whakapapa and heritage
but also because it showcases the talents and abilities of our
current pupils - the life of the school going forward.
The construction of our Po Korero sculpture also reflects many of our school values Perseverance - trying and not
giving up. I know doing clay sculpture
myself, it is not always easy to make the clay stick, but our teachers and students
perservered to see it completed, even when at the
last the tiles were sliding off their backing boards! Respect:
Creating this has builds a respect not only for those students and staff who came before, but also
for the teachers and  community members who assisted
our children in its production. Integrity:  As in any project, this one was about recognising and being honest about strengths
 and weaknesses and helping
one another to complete the task together. Diversity: This beautiful piece represents the diversity of our pupils and their whanau
 past and present, and
the diverse styles, characters, colours of the tiles are a celebration of the wonderful variation
that gives ManakauSchoolits special character.
Excellence: And it goes without saying that all those involved has given of best to produce something of excellence!!
Together the first letter of these words spell PRIDE.  Again thank you to all involved, but now I want to say a special thank you, to the tamariki
    of
Manakau School. Young people, you can be proud of what you have done in making this Po Korero. You can take great pride that your efforts have
helped create something which will be a reminder to successive generations, of our school motto Personal Best always! Well done!

    Kia Ora, Thank you

The pole structure was then installed by the front gate by the school caretaker Mr. Dean Murray. A fabulous piece of art works.
