Women in canoe, Lake Horowhenua, c1930

Letter (information) writtten with black pen: “Maori canoe amongst raupo at north end of Horowhenua Lake, early 1930’s (approached from angle of Kawiu Road, east side of swamp). The young woman were - Frances Pyke (later Mrs M. Duguid), Probably, Nancy Trisleton, Beverley Aplin (later Mrs M. or W. Barclay), One at far end of canoe, Lynne York (later Mrs E.S. Beverly). Would not know whether it was in use at that time, though obviously there was a paddle. The canoe did not appear to be waterproof. F.D.”

Printed on front of mounting board, top right, with black ink: “P 84”

Written on back with black ballpoint pen: “H.H. McDonald in Maori canoe on Hokio Stream.”

Also witten on back with blue ballpoint pen: “Koki Roki wrong in Te Hekenga.”

Hector Hugh McDonald in a canoe, possibly the Hamaria, on the Hokio Stream. Hector stands to one end of the canoe with a paddle in his hands. Behind him is the Te Maai ridge.

Group in Maori canoe at Lake Horowhenua

Inscription on reverse reads: “Hamaria canoe Donated by Chronicle People unknown”.

Two unidentified people sitting in the Hamaria canoe at Lake Horowhenua. To the left, sitting on the rim of the waka, is an unidentified European man wearing a short sleeved shirt and long trousers. Opposite him, sitting on the other rim of the waka, is an unidentified European woman, wearing a print dress which has white facings and cuffs at the edge of the short sleeves. Her hair is pinned up on top of her head and she is holding sunglasses in her hands. One of a series of three black and white photos (see also 2000.354.0000 & 2000.354.0001)
