Granny Smithson

Inscription on reverse reads: “Nurse Smithson and midwife and to many a doctor in the early settlement days. Practised from early 1890s to c. 1930s She died 1942. Lived nest north Levin School. Liquorland now on site. From memories of daughter Emma Charlotte. Married Newman then Ken Burt mother of Mrs Stan Small. F.C.S.”

Granny Smithson aged 74 or 75 years old. The original photograph from which this copy has been taken was taken in 1935 or 1936. Granny Smithson was a nurse, midwife and doctor to many of the early settlers in Levin. Her house was north of the Levin School site on Oxford Street (where Liquorland is today 2001).
