Loaded horse-drawn wagon with 3 men, Shannon, 1908 1 A4 photocopy (of front & back of postcard)

Information on seperate paper identifies the wagon driver (man sitting on top of sacks holding reins of horse team) as – John Retter, father of Joan Hyde (nee Retter) and Noel Retter. Other 2 men not identified. Also identifies location as – about where Dairy Co. later existed in Stafford Street, Shannon.

Date written on back of postcard – 16/6/1908 Addressed to: Mrs Gi….. Oxford S….. Levin With message: Awful good man on top. Will be down Thursday one train if fine, also family. Lillie

Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 129, with caption - The horse drawn brake which transported children from the Kingston Road area to Shannon School from 1906. Methods of transport have changed, and so have the fashions. The brake could accomodate about 12 children, but it would appear that it was not just the Kingston Road children who were caught by the camera.

Also used in book – “Shannon School Centennial Souvenir 1989”, page 47, with caption - The Kingston Road Brake 1907.

Information in 1949 Jubilee booklet (Acc.#1979.132.0002): 21 March, 1906 – Mr Lash began the conveying of Kingston Rd. children in brake. 9 May, 1907 – Children from Kingston Rd. conveyed by Mr Thomas Holt, who bought Mr L. Jenkin’s carrying business. 7 October, 1912 – Kingston Rd. brake ceased running. 2 December, 1912 – Mr John Retter resumed the running of the brake. 19 December, 1912 – The brake ceased running. 11 May, 1914 – Kingston Rd. brake recommenced under Mr R.Tippler. 25 June, 1920 – Kingston Rd. children conveyed in motor lorry owned by Mr J. Franks. 30 June, 1926 – Kingston Rd. bus service ceased.
