Hughes Family Portrait (outdoors)

Written on back with black ballpoint pen & blue pen: “Harry J. Hughes (deceased), Gertrude (Gwendoline) Hughes (deceased), son James Hughes (deceased 1985, aged 72). Harry Hughes bought bakery at corner of Oxford St. & Devon St. in 1915 from Joseph Scott, baking there until 1920, then selling business only, to McLean. Hughes bought business back in 1924, operating until 1935, when Phelps & Wenham operated it until 1968, when Bridewells Bakery Palm. Nth bought the business soon closing the bakery, using it for some yearsfor distribution of bread from Palm. Nth. Hughes kept ownership of property with it passing ultimately to son James. Property sold in 1968 to Hudson & Burnham for use as a used car yard. F.C. Swanwick.”

Harry, Gertrude and their son James Hughes, along with their dog, pose on the rock-lined path outside a wooden cottage. Mr Hughes is wearing a shirt and a short tie, and a jacket and trousers. He has his left hand on the shoulder of his son James, who is wearing a woolen pullover with a tie, shorts, and is barefooted. Mrs Hughes is wearing a white blouse, a long black (full) skirt and black shoes. Her hair is wound in a bun on top of her head.

Hughes Family and House - Devon St. & Oxford St. Intersection

Written on back with black & blue ballpoint pens: “The house on the S.W. corner of Devon St. & Oxford St. fronting the bakery (known from 1935 as the Arcadia Bakering [?] ).The house was older than the bakery (1909). It has been written in ‘Bush to Borough’ that a store was located at the corner in 1890. House demolished probably 1975 when Hudson & Burnham bought the property for used car sales. Hughes family in front of house. Harry Hughes sold bakery business in 1935. Photo probably late 1920’s or even 1930. Son Jim born 1913.” and “Donated by G.G. Taylor, P.O. Box 25316, St Heliers, Auckland. Executer of James Hughes Estate & one of the beneficeries.”

The Hughes family, Harry, his wife Gertrude and their son James pose with their dog outside their home on the corner of Devon Street and Oxford Street. The house is wooden with an iron hip roof, with one brick chimney on the left at the rear of the building. The house has a porch recessed into the front of the building, and sash windows. A wooden fence runs across the front of the property. This photograph is a companion photograph to 2000.324.0001, which features the same members of the Hughes family.

James Hughes and three others - at Arcadia Bakery

Written on back - James Hughes (Jim) left (deceased 1986, aged 72). Arcadia bread van indicates that the scene is at the Arcadia Bakery on the corner of Devon & Oxford Streets, now (1996) Kentucky Fried Chicken. (Photo could be when Jim inherited bakery from his father ?).

James Hughes three other unidentified men alongside a van marked Arcadia Bakery. The Arcadia Bakery was situated on the corner of Oxford and Devon Streets where Kentucky Fried Chicken is currently situated.
