Oxford Street, Levin

Inscription on reverse reads: “Keep your feet dry. love.” and Miss Stella Worth c/o…......” remainder of inscription is unreadable

Oxford Street looking south along the eastern side from the Oxford Street / Queen Street intersection. This photograph has been taken after 1903 when the Post Office was opened. The street is unsealed and a single gas lamp sits atop a standard in the middle of the intersection.

Written on back with blue ballpoint pen: “1912 New Year prank 1912. Horowhenua Historical Society.

“Outhouse” at the Oxford Street and Queen Street intersection, 1912. The moving of the outhouse to this site was a New Year’s Eve prank. The centre of the intersection is marked by a lamp standard. Caption on photograph reads: “Wha for!”. In the background are a group of people in Queen Street and the Post Office. Photograph was taken New Year’s Day morning, 1 January, 1912.

The eastern side of Oxford Street north of Queen Street and Oxford Street intersection looking south in 1910 -11. The street is unsealed, but there are several large commercial premises, the Post Office, and the distinctive plane trees grow at the side of the road.

Queen St. & Bristol St., c.1921

Printed on front of original postcard, as caption: “Levin.”

Penciled on back: “75 years in Levin, p. 12”

Bristol Street about 1921, looking towards Queen Street from about where The WareHouse building now stands (2001). The early Bank of New Zealand is on the left. Now with additions and alterations, it has been converted into lawyers offices. The Town Hall. built in 1896, was used for community activities until 1942, when it was demolioshed. The bank of Australasia has had various occupants; the Social Security Office, the Public Trust Office, the Citizens Advice Bureau, and is currently a lawyers office (2001).

At the centre of the intersection is a gas standard with two lamps. The Post Office is on the left hand side of the photograph and the Levin Hotel on the right hand side.
