Used in Chronicle newspaper supplement – ‘Levin Borough 75th Jubilee, 1906-1981’, page 64, with caption – Looks like Chainey’s.

The interior of an unidentified shop, possibly in Levin. A man in a suit stands alongside a wooden counter. Bicycles and tyres are to the left of the photograph while Columbus radios are advertised prominently. A wireless sits on the centre of the counter.

Swainson & Bevan Ltd, pre-1910

Stamped on back with black ink: – Horowhenua Historical Society. Acc. No. Date

Swainson & Bevan Ltd. building on the south western corner of Mako Mako Road and Oxford Street at Weraroa before 1910. The wooden building is two storied and has a coloured iron verandah supported by wooden posts. The shop opens onto the corner of the intersection and a gas lamp is suspended from the verandah above the entrance. On Oxford Street a man is driving a horse and cart, while a man sits astride a horse on Mako Mako Road. Four men stand outside the entrance to the shop, the one in shirtsleeves leaning against the verandah support post has been identified as Walter Bull. Another man stands beside the horse and rider on Mako Mako Road. On the seventh and eigth windows on the upper floor of the building, the words “public” and “library” are inscribed.

Earlier postcard of generally the same site as photograph 2000.316.0009. Many of the commercial buildings are the same as in the previous postcard. The cars are of an earlier vintage and are angle-parked.

This early 1900s photograph shows the Commercial and Farmers Club building on the eastern side of Oxford Street north of the Oxford Street Intersection. The Post Office is south of the intersection and in Queen Street a horse and trap are approching the intersection. Two women dressed in white blouses and dark skits with two children and a man are outside a verandahed shop. The centre of the intersection is marked by a gas standard lamp.

Main Street, Foxton, c1870

Main Street, Foxton, looking south from Ihakara Gardens, c1870. In the foreground two graves are surrounded by picket fences. In the centre of the photograph a train can be viewed com9ing northwards on the track whih runs down the centre of Main Street. A number of men with corses and carts are in the area now known as “The Triangle”. Residential and commercial properties along with a church line both sides of the street.

Early Motor Vehicles of Foxton

Inscription on reverse reads: “Clyde St where Foxton Motors is cira 1909. ? George Rough Snr, George Rough, Alec Ross. Cars left to right: 1. Buick, 2. Renault, 3. Overland, 4. ? continental car.”

Four vehicles lined up outside J Buglass’ garage in Clyde Street Foxton in about 1909. The people in the cars include George Rough Senior and Junior along with Alec Ross. The cars pictured include a Buick, a Renault, an Overland and an unidentified make.

Main Street, Foxton

Inscription on front of one postcard reads: “Saturday instead of Thursday. F V E” and is addressed on the reverse to ” G W Lennan, Naumai, College Street, Palmerston North”.

Queen Street East

Written on back with black ballpoint pen: “Cambridge St. – Queen St. intersection. Late 1920’s. Shop verandah with Box on it known as ‘Chocolate Box’ & one next to it with shaded Queen St. facing sign has ‘Saddler’. The one across Cambridge St. with angled doorway is unknown. Car on extreme right outside what then was ‘Bonners Garage’. Beyond 2nd or so building on left & back a bit was wood & coal yard.

Penciled on seperate paper – Comments from John De Bonnaire, Julie Innes’ son. 26/07/00 Julie Innes – lived in Levin. Married about 1928 and moved to Palmerston North. She had an interest in photography as a hobby.

Queen Street East. 1 B&W photo print.

Inscription on reverse identifies this as showing the Cambridge Street – Queen Street intersection. One early car is parked on the wrong side of the road to the right, and a second car is in the distance travelling towards the Tararuas. A railway crossing sign is on the left hand side of the road. A shop known as “The Chocolate Box” is on the immediate left hand side of the street.

Plane trees and telegraph poles feature in this photo of Oxford Street, with many businesses having two storied buildings, some with ornate decoration. A number of forms of transport are shown, nine cars, a horse and trap, a horse and gig a bicycle and a motorbike with sidecar.

Oxford Street, 1933

Inscriptions on reverse read: “Levin. Dec. 1st. 1933” and “Donated Mrs Jordan”

Two unidentified persons stand on the footpath outside A L Williams Tearooms on the western side of Oxford Street, where the DEKA store is now located (2001). On the southern side of the tea rooms is Kenneth Aitken’s bookshop. Parked against the kerb on an angle is a service car with the destinations New Plymouth, Wanganui and Wellington painted on its side.

Main Street, Foxton, c.1920

Black and white photograph.

Personal notes writen on back with ink pen - Main St. Foxton. Remember this place ? The grandest (?) place on earth!! This was taken before Seaview Park was created (?) there was just a plantation of trees there. A year or two ago I think. Perhaps longer.

Oxford Street

The western side of Oxford Street looking north from mid-way along the street c 1900. The street is unsealed and the plane trees which were planted in 1897 have protective fences around them. The only form of transport is horse-drawn.
