Description
The opening of the 1956 50th jubilee celebrations.
From left: Mrs Herring, mayoress, Mr H.E. Herring, Mayor, the then Minister of Works, Mr W.S. Goosman and Mr D.P. Todd, chairman of the jubilee committee.
Mr Goosman stood in for the Prime Minister, Mr K.J. Holyoake, who could not be present. The group is being challenged in the traditional way by a representative of the Maori people.
These two pictures may have been taken at the borough's 50th celebrations in March of 1956.
... The parade of old cars ...
... and the crowd of children watching something in the sky should spark a memory or two.
The 1956 commemorative parade through Levin drew a big crowd (as did the 1981 75th) and many of the floats had taken hours of preparation. Foreground is the Plunket float, then the Post Office and following that a farmers' group.
