The opening of the 1956 50th jubilee celebrations.

From left: Mrs Herring, mayoress, Mr H.E. Herring, Mayor, the then Minister of Works, Mr W.S. Goosman and Mr D.P. Todd, chairman of the jubilee committee. Mr Goosman stood in for the Prime Minister, Mr K.J. Holyoake, who could not be present.

The group is being challenged in the traditional way by a representative of the Maori people.
