Paekakariki – on the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Line, c.1894 1 B&W photo print, copy

View from hill.

Used in book – “Uncommon Carrier”, page 86, with caption - Paekakariki about 1894. Identifiable changes since opening are the cattle yard, 1888-89; the firewood stage, 1890-91; and the home signals, 1891-92. Outside the now doubled engine shed are an English and American 2-6-2 to take trains on to Longburn. The only freight cars stabled are for sheep and cattle. The sole crossing loop could accommodate a 63-wagon train. (From the A.N. Palmer Collection)
