Percy Nation Memorial on Plimmer Terrace, Shannon, late 1980’s. 1 B&W photo print
Engraved on the memorial - Erected by the residents of Shannon in memory of Lance Corporal Percy Nation, 7th N.Z. Contingent, who was killed in battle …?...othasberg, South Africa, 23rd February 1902, aged 20 years.
Information in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 169 states: Percy, another of W.C. Nation’s sons, served in the Boer War, and his letters home were often published in the paper. Percy was a very popular young man, and when he was killed in action a memorial was erected in his honour on Plimmer Terrace, Shannon. This is probably the only war memorial erected to the memory of one man in New Zealand.
This memorial was later (April 2001 – see Acc.#s2002.091) moved to the memorial gardens opposite Ballance Street, where the Shannon War Memorial (Cenotaph) is located.
