Left Column (top to bottom) - a) Original Shannon “Railway Station”, looking north, c.1890. {copy} Taken from top of railway wagon (shown in photo c below) Used in book – “Uncommon Carrier”, page 92, with caption - Looking north about 1888 from the same spot, we can see that the bush felling had only gone as far as the surveyed township perimeter. Used in book – “Horowhenua County and its People”, page 123, with caption - Track under construction, Shannon, 1886. NZR.
b) Original Shannon “Railway Station”, looking south, c.1890. {copy} Waiting shed (“Station”) at left with 3 sets of railway lines at right with wagon on 3rd line (far right). Used in book – “From Bush & Swamp”, page 30, with caption - The first Shannon railway station, looking south, about 1890. This waiting shed was moved to Paraparaumu when the present railway station was built by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company. Large areas of standing bush can be seen clearly in this photograph. Used in book – “Uncommon Carrier”, page 92, with caption - This view of Shannon, looking south about 1888, shows the density of the unfelled bush, the telephone-linked shelter, the loop siding, and a goods brake on the dead-end siding.
