Penciled on back: “Major Kemp wearing his N.Z. Cross.”

Major Kemp – Te Rangihiwinui Te Keepa dressed in his uniform of the Native Friendly Forces. He is wearing his NZ Cross, awarded to him for his efforts in the New Zealand Wars, and the sword and belt which he received from Queen Victoria.

The sword and belt are now held at the Whanganui Regional Museum, the New Zealand Cross decoration was buiried with Kemp’s only nephew.
