Inscriptions on reverse read: “First flower stall on southern approach to Levin, run by Mrs G D McDonell.” and “First roadside flowershop in district. Mrs McDonell Main Rd. South Levin. South of Travel Lodge Motel. c 1945 – 1960s.”

The first flower stall located on the western side of the Main South Road, Levin. The stall which was situated south of the Travel lodge motel, was owned and run by Mrs McDonell,

Penciled on back – 46. Horowhenua Co.(or County?), Otaki Churches, Maori. Commissaries for the gathering was run on Army lines with Maori Battalion cooks and a quartermasters store which stocked everything except pepper, at the time unobtainable. Cooks superintending boiling meat and vegetables over an open fire.

Written on back - James Hughes (Jim) left (deceased 1986, aged 72). Arcadia bread van indicates that the scene is at the Arcadia Bakery on the corner of Devon & Oxford Streets, now (1996) Kentucky Fried Chicken. (Photo could be when Jim inherited bakery from his father ?).

James Hughes three other unidentified men alongside a van marked Arcadia Bakery. The Arcadia Bakery was situated on the corner of Oxford and Devon Streets where Kentucky Fried Chicken is currently situated.
