The Weraroa Hotel, destroyed by fire sometime about 1910.

The licence then moved to the Grand, which itself was destroyed by fire in 1981.

Decried as white elephant:

No proposition in the history of Levin was discussed so hotly as the municipal buildings scheme. It owed its conception to Mr D. W. Matheson (who was mayor in 1923) and some of his councillors, who first considered it in that year.
