Weraroa Hotel (1895-1912)

Built 1895 for Staples Breweries on south-west corner of Ward Street. Mrs Higgens licensee. Burnt down 14 March 1912. (Weraroa Dairy now on site).

Making eel baskets, Weraroa Boy's Training Farm

Typed on piece of paper: “Weraroa Boy’s Training Farm. Man at centre, with cap and moustache, may be Superintendent Major Burlinson. Making eel baskets.”

A typed inscripton on a slip of paper reads: “Weraroa Boy’s Training Farm Man at centre, with cap and moustache, may be Superintendent Major Burlinson. Making eel baskets.” However, this photograph of a group of Maori making hinaki (eel traps) from flax under trees also appears in the McDonald collection as 1977.047.0037 and 1977.047.0044 with no reference to the Weraroa Boys Farm.

Main Road at Weraroa showing the Weraroa Hotel on the corner of Ward Street, and the Levin Railway Station on the left in the distance. In the centre of the photo is a horse and trap, and a youth leans on a bicycle chatting to two young girls. Two women and a girl have just walked past the general store, which doubles as a registry office for servants, and there are others outside the hotel and other shops.
