Paper with typed information: “PNDL/BF 8 c.1904 Felling White Pine in the Levin district. Tree on the right is of unusual size. White rectangular area between two jigger boards is a sign nailed to the trunk. The man at the base is holding a jigger board, three others in use. Copied from AJHR 1904 C-1 P.30”

The first photo shows Hector McDonald in a canoe, possibly the Hamaria on the Hokio Stream. Taken from the Te Maai ridge looking west. Eel weir in mid picture and Hector Jnr’s home “Lakeside” in the background. Inscription reads, “cf photo taken by Miss Picken in 1977 from same position”. Also, “Looking downstream to the home of Hector McDonald Junior, canoe, eel weir and odd houses with…..(remainder unreadable)”.

The second photo is also taken from Te Maai ridge, but looking east. Inscription beneath photo, “Not this.”
