Penciled on the back of HHS 2000.540.0002 W.H. Field Collection Manakau, Horowhenua county.

The Main highway, railway and settlement at Manakau early in the 20th century. This photograph shows three horse drawn carts as a method of transport. The railway crossing is marked by a white picket fence with gas lamps on each side of the crossing entrance. In the background are the foothills of the Tararua Ranges.

Weatherboard villa with iron roof, built to face the south. The roof rises to two gabels in the front, one either side of the front porch and enterance. Beneath each of the gabels are bay windows with a set of three windows in each. All the windows are of the sash type. In the rear on the left hand side of the photograph, the roof of the tower which is attached to the house, can be seen.

Main Street, Foxton, c1870

Main Street, Foxton, looking south from Ihakara Gardens, c1870. In the foreground two graves are surrounded by picket fences. In the centre of the photograph a train can be viewed com9ing northwards on the track whih runs down the centre of Main Street. A number of men with corses and carts are in the area now known as “The Triangle”. Residential and commercial properties along with a church line both sides of the street.
