A 25-year-old man appeared in Levin District Court yesterday on charges of assault with a weapon and demanding with menace in relation to a shooting in Levin.
On Tuesday at 4.40pm shots were fired outside a Morgan Crescent address in Levin, injuring one person.
The 35-year-old shooting victim was flown to Palmerston North Hospital with gunshot wounds to his face.
Senior sergeant Rob Duindam said the man discharged himself from hospital late that night, after a "what appears to be small calibre round was recovered from his jaw".
Police believe the victim was very fortunate not to have been injured more seriously.
They are concerned about the danger to the public during the shooting because a number of rounds were fired and the shootings happened in a built-up residential area.
Mr Duindam said the confrontation happened while the victim was at the Morgan Crescent address. After the shots were fired two vehicles left the scene. Another vehicle at the scene left a short time later.
One of the three vehicles located by police later that night, a Silver Falcon Utility, is alleged to have been stolen.
A white Falcon sedan and a red Falcon Sedan were still being sought by police yesterday.
A large number of witnesses have been spoken to and more will be interviewed today.
A scene search has been conducted and the victim will be reinterviewed by police.
Approximately 12 staff are working on the inquiry and at this stage no motive for the attack has been established.
The shooting is the second high profile event in the Horowhenua in the last week.
Last Thursday 29 year old Levin constable Leon Gary Pigott appeared in Palmerston North District Court on two charges of having cannabis for supply at Levin and Longburn.
Mr Pigott appeared in Palmerston North District Court again on July 20.
He has been stood down from duty and a request for his suspension has been made to the police commissioner.
